The Elite Dangerous Odyssey Is Over On Consoles

Elite Dangerous Odyssey

Elite Dangerous Odyssey will not receive any future content across consoles, according to an update from developer Frontier.

In a new blog post over on developer Frontier’s website, David Braben addressed the ‘less than ideal’ launch of Elite Dangerous Odyssey with the news that the studio will be canceling all console content. For the foreseeable future, players who are boldly going into Odyssey can expect all of Frontier’s energy to be focused on fixing the shaky foundations that make up the PC version of this far-reaching update. The statement reads:

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this, we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

This does give console owners who forked out the roughly $30 installment a little hope that things shouldn’t get any worse, but it is hardly encouraging. Initially launched in May 2021, Odyssey is the latest major expansion for the much-loved space farming sim, Elite Dangerous. While the sandbox sim was staring down a bright future, This add-on didn’t quite stick the landing. Where commanders were expecting to take the game onto new landscapes, stepping out of the cockpit and following titles like No Man’s Sky out into a wealth of biomes, they instead encountered a whole world of bugs. This isn’t the first time Elite Dangerous has had some serious in-game engine trouble, and fans might remember the massive delays to Carrier sized vessels that resulted from this.

Despite the shaky performance of Odyssey, the aforementioned space sim from Hello Games always provides some hope that if No Man’s Sky can recover from its atrocious launch then maybe we might step foot on the Thargoids homeworld one day too.
