Elex 2 players are now diving into a new defense of all life on Magalan, as the threat of the Skyands that the Hybrid mentioned years prior have arrived in full force. Players must build up their own faction/alliance, The Sixth Power, while allying with one of Elex 2’s various factions: the Albs, the Morkons, the Berserkers, the Outlaws, or the Clerics.

In all of this, in a similar vein to the first game, Elex 2 players learn of a much bigger threat than the Skyands. It unpacks a lot of lore and some misconceptions on Jax’s and the player’s behalf, making it very clear Elex 3 is very much in mind at Piranha Bytes. BE WARNED: THERE ARE MAJOR ELEX 2 SPOILERS AHEAD.

Elex 2: The New Threat to Magalan

In Elex 2, Jax learns that Calaan wasn’t the only ship designed in mind of saving humanity from the coming comet—Cassandra was another for Magalan’s scientists. Their mission wasn’t to save humanity, though, but to instead obtain immortal life by reaching some giant cosmic entity known as The Singularity. It’s uncertain what it looks like, but it sounds like one of Marvel’s Celestials and a destroyer like Galactus at the same time.

Cassandra and its scientists, who would become the Skyands, were able to take Elex from the Singularity and put it on the comet headed for Magalan—they could not arrive back in time. In other words, it wasn’t a normal natural disaster that brought this material to Magalan; it was the plan of these scientists and Adam Dawkins, who has used Elex to achieve a certain level of immortal life. He was supposed to prepare the world for the Skyand’s return, but in that, he has failed (the events of Elex 1).

The problem is that Dark Elex, introduced in this sequel, is draw to Elex like a magnetic field. The Singularity doesn’t seem happy about having this part of itself stolen—if it has emotions—but for one reason or another, it too is being drawn to the world of Magalan. The Skyands were aiming to reshape the world in order to deal with the Singularity, as they’ve also discovered that certain “Elementals” would be capable of controlling the power of the Singularity.

On its own, in its raw state, it would absorb the world and chaotically change and defy all laws of nature, so the Skyands say. However, they intend to control it and reshape Magalan and its occupants once again—still playing God. Players learn that there are two Elemental anomalies of the first Elex outside the Skyand’s manipulations, that being Adam and Jax. So, it stands to reason that the third game will revolve around avoiding entire destruction, controlling the Singularity, and getting it to leave Magalan alone—in one final, epic battle between Adam and Jax once more.

It stands to reason that there will be a few more story twists here, but that’s likely what it boils down too: the best the old world has to offer in Adam and the best that the new world has now, Jax. The Singularity seems like an incredibly angry force of nature, that in and of itself can defy and rewrite nature, and so it seems safe to say that this threat is even bigger than that of the comet, the Albs and the Hybrid, and the Skyands.

Elex 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
