Are you tired of MMORPGs that are missing the “Massive” players they’re supposed to have? Hopping online with thousands of other players is one of the things that makes MMORPGs great, but so many games these days feel empty, or feel as though they just don’t have very active communities. Luckily, we’ve checked the charts, and put together a list of 5 of Steams most active MMORPGs by their current peak daily player count.
5. New World
Amazon Game Studios first original IP New World has been a roller coaster, in nearly every sense. From a difficult launch process that saw servers slammed by new players, to the recent merges to consolidate active players into one place, New World has proven that, despite the problems it has had, there are still thousands of die hard fans ready and willing to represent their faction, and bring death to all those that oppose them.
New World currently sits at around 30 thousand daily active players, which is pretty decent, but at the moment it is trending downward from an all time high of over 900K active players back in September of 2021. MMORPG.com reported over a 90% drop in daily active players back in January of 2022, and it’s a trend that has continued – but if you’re interested in playing New World, don’t fret too much, as Amazon Game Studios is committed to improving the game. Currently, New World is only available on Steam. We hope to see an increase in daily active players in the future for New World.
4. Path of Exile
If you love Action RPG’s, then you are probably no stranger to Path of Exile. It’s no secret that we at MMORPG.com love Path of Exile, as the game has been the winner of best persistent online game for 4 years. With many years’ worth of updates, a diablo-like combat, and customization system that will give players a lot of opportunities to fine-tune their build, it’s no wonder that this is one of the most played games on Steam.
Currently Path of Exile has around 40 thousand daily active players, and it is actually trending upwards. The game’s presence on Steam back in 2013 was a mere 28 thousand at its peak, but several years on we’ve seen a recurring player count on Steam that has shown significant peak active players, which actually culminated in Path of Exiles highest concurrent player count on record back in February of this year. The Steam numbers aren’t the whole picture, either, as Path of Exile is also available on Xbox One and Playstation 4.
3. Warframe
It’s hard to believe Warframe is almost a decade old, because it sure doesn’t feel like it. While Warframe isn’t an MMORPG in the traditional sense, this visceral third person shooter has grown in ways I can’t believe, with tons of exciting content and new Warframes being added all the time. In addition to that, there’s a ton of story to keep players invested, cooperative play, and plenty of sweet weapons for Tenno to use to eviscerate their foes. It also doesn’t hurt that the parkour style-movement is just incredibly cool. Space ninjas for the win!
Warframe has seen some substantial growth through the years. The latest bump to its active players happened around December of 2021 when new content dropped, but it has since settled to an average of 45 to 50k peak players a day on Steam. However, Warframe is on Xbox, Playstation and the Nintendo Switch, with plans to make the game available on Mobile devices later in 2022. There are more than enough players to fight alongside in Warframe, so hop on in Tenno.
2. MIR4
If you’re surprised to sir MIR4 on the list, or maybe you’re just wondering, “What is MIR4?” I’m sure you’re not alone. MIR4 could easily go under the radar because, despite it’s very high active player base, the game itself has some very mixed ratings on Steam. The game features 4 classes, a free loot system, a castle siege system, and … wait for it… NFT’s. Yes that’s right, MIR4 has both Crypto tokens and NFT’s that you can earn in game, and sell to other players.
Whether you scoff at the idea of NFT’s in games, or you're all for them, MIR4 has been holding steady at nearly 60 thousand players a day, down from an all time peak of just under 100K players in November of 2021. After more than 4 months, MIR4 has managed to keep a relatively high active player base, considering the low all time high peak. MMORPG.com reported back in January that, although Steam banned cryptocurrency and NFT games, some have slipped under the radar, and MIR4 has not only gone unchecked, but it seems to be thriving. MIR4 is also available on mobile devices, which means there will be more than enough players to keep you entertained in this action packed MMORPG.
1. Lost Ark
Whether it’s due to the game just releasing, or because it’s just that good, Lost Ark tops our list of the most active MMORPG’s on Steam. Smilegates’ action-RPG behemoth takes players to Arkesia, where players will choose from 5 classes with multiple advanced class choices, to defeat hordes of enemies. This free-to-play ARPG has plenty of story to keep you entertained, but it’s real strength is in its difficult PvE end-game, and exciting competitive PvP. Although this game is also published in the west by Amazon Game Studio, the servers have been relatively stable, and this is apparent with it’s continuously high peak player numbers.
While Lost Ark is down a little from it’s all-time high of 1.3 million concurrent players, it still manages nearly 800K peak players per day, which is pretty massive. It’s too early to tell if Lost Ark will keep its momentum, but the developers already have a new expansion headed down the pipe, so all expectations point to a steady player base, or potentially some growth if there is an aggressive content schedule. Since Lost Ark is a free-to-play game, there’s really no reason not to give this one a shot.
