The Wolf Among Us 2 is a long-awaited sequel to one of Telltale’s more unique games. With a new trailer having been released, it is shown to follow the same storytelling style as the original Wolf Among Us. Film noir aesthetics and a corrupt New York in the 1980s will all return, pleasing fans who are familiar with the popular Telltale Games' style. To top it off, being an adaptation of the Fables comics, The Wolf Among Us 2 is guaranteed to take characters from fairy tales, public domain literature, myths, and nursery rhymes to create its grim plot.

Both Fables and The Wolf Among Us have used almost every famous character that could be classified as a “Fable." With a few exceptions, such as Bigby and Snow White, The Wolf Among Us aims to give bigger roles to otherwise minor characters, or introduce characters to the Fables universe and integrate them into Fabletown. With the new trailer for The Wolf Among Us 2 showing Bigby fighting The Wizard of Oz’s Scarecrow and Tin Man, one can assume that the upcoming sequel will try to bring more formerly unrepresented Fables into the mix.

Underrepresented Fables That Could Appear in The Wolf Among Us 2

While some well-known fairy tale characters have yet to be shown in the Fables universe, The Wolf Among Us 2 could still take minor characters in the comics and flesh them out. It can also introduce characters who have yet to have a major role, like how The Wolf Among Us gave more representation for The Wind in the Willows and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Since the Scarecrow and the Tin Man are already in the game, another good character to round up the Wizard of Oz cast would be the Cowardly Lion. He could be a supporting character meant to help Bigby as opposed to the seemingly antagonistic Tin Man and the Scarecrow. The only Wizard of Oz characters to have prominent roles in either Fables or The Wolf Among Us are Bufkin, a flying monkey, and Dorothy herself. Having the iconic trio that Dorothy encounters in Oz would be an interesting exploration of the story’s effects on Oz’s denizens.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is one of the most famous short stories in the realm of fairy tales. Its titular characters do appear in Fables, but are only really prominent in the Farm arc. These characters are not obscure, but exploring their characterization in The Wolf Among Us 2 would be beneficial - especially if part of the game takes place on the Farm. Goldilocks in particular is a depraved and violent shadow of the little girl in her story, which makes for a fun contrast.

Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland are two of the most famous books that wound up associated with fairy tales. Both Pinocchio and Geppetto are important characters in Fables, while Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum are prominent in The Wolf Among Us. Some Alice characters, like the White Rabbit, also make minor appearances in Fables. Like with Oz, having more characters from these two famous children’s stories could serve as an ideal contrast between the original works and the dark Fables universe.

The Wolf Among Us 2 should also consider adding more characters from nursery rhymes, especially since most of the standard fairy tale characters play a role in some capacity. Characters like the Three Blind Mice, the Itsy Bitsy Spider, and Little Miss Muffet had minor roles or never appeared. While some nursery rhyme characters like Little Boy Blue, Jack Horner, and Little Bo Peep have been important to the Fables storyline alongside main players such as Bigby, the genre has often been neglected in favor of the other styles that belong to the broad “Fable” category.

One of the most interesting things about the Fables universe is seeing how recognizable characters from childhood stories respond to harsh conditions. The Wolf Among Us 2 seems to continue this trend. Wondering who the new Fables will be, especially since developers imply there will be a similar emphasis on brand-new characters in this game, should be an exciting aspect of the time leading to the game’s release.

The Wolf Among Us 2 releases in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
