Telltale has announced the sequel to The Wolf Among Us, with the protagonist Bigby returning in 2023. The original game came out in October 2013, and many fans gave up on a sequel ever coming to light when Telltale closed in 2018 and announced canceling the second season of The Wolf Among Us. However, the game studio was later revived by LCG Entertainment and now fans are excited to see what adventure awaits them next in Fabletown.
The Wolf Among Us 2's trailer has shown that Bigby will once again be the main character. Not every player will have read the Fable comics the games are based on, and that leaves a lot of interesting information about Bigby in the shadows. The man was not always a sheriff. Fans could also be surprised to learn that Bigby has relatives, and that he also has significant weaknesses.
Bigby's Life In The Homelands
Like all fables, Bigby was born in the Homelands before he was driven out with the rest of them to the Mundy world. In his early life, he was actually the runt of his litter. His mother was a wolf named Winter and his father was the North Wind. Calling him the "Big Bad Wolf" actually started as a mocking joke from his siblings, and it got shortened to "Bigby." His mother was his greatest ally, often shielding him from the bullying of his brothers until she died. The North Wind was never quite in Bigby's young life, and Bigby hated him for abandoning the family.
When his mother died, and he was not large enough to even protect her body from carrion eaters, he vowed to become big. This made him eat something larger and larger every day so that he could become big enough to confront the North Wind. This is how the legends of him started with the Three Little Pigs, Peter and the Wolf, and Little Red Riding Hood. Eventually, he swore to only eat humans after the woodsman tried to kill him. He grew enormous, eating entire towns, killing armies, and even dragons. When he felt like he was big enough to confront the North Wild, he was defeated seven times and gave up.
Ending Up In Fabletown
When the Adversary began to conquer the Homelands, fables began to flee and Bigby helped them. He hunted the Adversary's armies and destroyed their supplies when possible. He even led fables to the portal of the Mundy world, though would taste each of them to make sure none of them were spies. It was during these times that he met Snow White, who he immediately was attracted to. He admired her bravery, as she was not afraid to pick up a sword and defend herself from a giant wolf.
At the time Bigby left the Homelands, he did not first go to Fabletown. Instead, he continued to live as a wolf and wandered Europe, settling in the Carpathian Mountains. What got him into Fabletown was Snow White and a fable scarecrow named Feathertop. They tracked down Bigby and invited him to Fabletown. When he agreed, Snow used a lycanthropy-stained knife on him, which gave Bigby his ability to change into human form whenever he wished.
When Bigby came to Fabletown, the town was under King Cole's administration. Cole recognized Bigby's skills and decided he would make a great sheriff. This was not a popular decision, due to Bigby's dark past. Fabletown decided that while Bigby can be the sheriff, he is forbidden from ever going to the Farm, where all the animal fables live that cannot pass as human or afford a glamour. It is around this time that the Wolf Among Us games take place. However, the comics go much further than Bigby's time as a sheriff.
Bigby's Powers And Weaknesses
Fables typically have powers and weaknesses, and Bigby especially has a number of them. He can heal from injuries that would normally kill mortals, and do so with no visible scars. As proven in his backstory, his strength and agility can go toe-to-toe with fantastical beasts such as dragons. However, this is mostly just in his wolf form, as he is weaker as a human.
Being born from the North Wind, Bigby is also unaffected by cold. He has a high pain tolerance and endurance. True to his wolf nature, he has enhanced senses, with a supernatural sense of smell and hearing. He is especially attuned to Snow's smell, often to always know her location and mood. He also has wind abilities, due to being related to the North Wind. He can hold his breath for weeks and move air with the force of a hurricane with his own breath.
While all of his powers are impressive, Bigby also has weaknesses. He has never been in a gunfight, fired a gun, or learned to how to drive. He constantly smokes cigarettes to dull his senses, as New York City gives him a sensory overload. Silver weapons also have a strong effect on his body, taking much longer to heal, and can cause long-term damage if left in his system.
The Wolf Among Us 2 releases in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
