Since his first adventure in Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001, the Master Chief has become one of the most recognizable characters for the Xbox brand. One main reason for that popularity is that the Spartan has kept his signature green MJOLNIR armor throughout the series. However, it has gone through several modifications down through the years. Recently, one modder decided to reimagine a classic scene from Halo 3 by giving the Master Chief a different version of his armor.

In a post on Reddit, a user known as TheChunkierBean shared a video they captured from the opening of Halo 3. In the clip, Sergeant Major Avery Johnson and a squad of Marines discovered the Master Chief, seemingly unconscious in the wilderness. While the scene was iconic on its own, what made this video particularly noteworthy was that the modder had managed to replace the Master Chief’s MJOLNIR armor seen in Halo 3 with the upgraded armor he wore in Halo 4.

This impressive feat accomplished by TheChunkierBean gave the scene a new but familiar feel. When moving to Halo 4, the developers at 343 Industries decided to update the appearance of the Spartan armor compared to that seen in Halo 3. According to the developers, Cortana had upgraded it using nanobots while the Chief was in cryosleep. While this new design for the armor doubtlessly impacted its appearance, it still strangely fit the look of the scene after being modded into the 2007 game. In addition to showcasing this impressive mod, TheChunkierBean revealed they intended to give the Master Chief his Halo 3 armor in Halo 4 next.

Since posting this video on Reddit, numerous members of the Halo community have taken notice. Many found the mod intriguing with an impressive 17,300 upvotes in only a couple of days. While many people disliked that the Master Chief’s new armor came via nanobots, most admitted that the actual look of the Halo 4 armor was good. In addition, some commented that they still loved the opening to Halo 3 even almost 15 years later, noting that the musical score was very nostalgic. Others said they missed Sergeant Major Johnson and his iconic voice lines.

In other news related to Halo 3, the servers for the game on Xbox 360 recently went offline, bringing a classic era in gaming to a close. Following this permanent shutdown, passionate fans shared videos and messages revealing the many memories they had experienced playing the classic first-person shooter. For example, one Halo 3 player gave an inspiring eulogy during one of the final Capture the Flag matches on the Xbox 360 servers.

Halo 3 is available now for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
