It’s being reported that Sony will extend production of the PlayStation 4 console to the end of this year.
That’s according to Bloomberg, who cite “people familiar with the matter” as their sources. Apparently, Sony have informed their assembly partners they will continue making the older console through 2022. This is, in part, to help alleviate the problem of continued stock issues of the PlayStation 5, making the newer console still difficult to get hold of over a year after its original launch.
Though the sources asked to remain unnamed, they claim Sony originally intended to discontinue production at the end of 2022. Apparently the company was planning a swift transition between PS4 and PS5, until the world had other plans. Continued issues with global supply chains and global component shortages have made supplies of the newer console scarce.
Instead, roughly one million PlayStation 4 consoles will now hit the market over the next twelve months. Though Sony didn’t comment on the original plans, a spokesperson confirmed production of the PS4 would continue in 2022. “It is one of the best-selling consoles ever and there is always crossover between generations.”
With several upcoming PlayStation exclusives launching on both previous gen and next gen systems, PS4 players still have plenty to look forward to. These include Horizon Forbidden West, which PlayStation had to backtrack on plans to charge for its PS4 to PS5 upgrade. Incidentally, it was this time last year when Sony announced they were to wind down production of the PS4 Pro model in Japan.
