Microsoft continues to robustly support the Xbox Series X post-launch. Not only is Xbox Games Studios continuing to ramp up game production, but the Xbox team is hard at work adding polish to the Xbox console experience with fixes and patches. Thursday afternoon, Xbox developers confirmed that the October update for the Xbox Series X was ready and with it several key new features. Perhaps the most exciting addition being an upgrade to the dashboard of the Xbox Series X, improving its resolution up to 4K.

Up until now, the Xbox Series X has used a 1080p dashboard upscaled to 4K resolution. That means that the Xbox Series X's menus, its Guide, and general UI have not been native 4K since launch, though the upscaled dashboard was visually impressive regardless. Going forward, the Xbox Series X's dashboard will be native 4K for those with a 4K-capable television or monitor. In practice, that means that UI elements including game art, buttons, and other dashboard elements will have "increased sharpness and improved text readability." The 4K dashboard upgrade on Xbox Series X is available starting today.

Next on the list of October Xbox update features is an important addition for accessibility. The Xbox team has now added what it's calling Night Mode for Xbox consoles. Night Mode includes several adjustable options for Xbox users who may be using the console in low-light environments, or who are sensitive to light. The options include a dimmer and blue light filtration for their display, as well as an adjustable brightness slider for both an Xbox console power button and an Xbox controller logo button.

The last major feature addition of the October Update is what the Xbox team is calling Quick Settings. Quick Settings can be accessed from the Xbox Guide, rather than requiring an Xbox console user to navigate through the dashboard's various menus to find its settings. This way, players can adjust settings quickly, including console accessibility options while still in-game.

Altogether, it's a robust update for Xbox console owners that includes some exciting features for everyone. Night Mode and Quick Access should make for useful improvements that all Xbox console users can appreciate. The 4K may be exclusive for Xbox Series X/S users, but it's a sign of the Xbox team continuing to build towards the future if and when Xbox users upgrade to a new console or 4K display.

Expect the Xbox development team to continue evaluating and adding features month to month going forward. As ever, Xbox users can apply to be Xbox Insiders, which allows them to participate in beta tests for upcoming Xbox features. Details on Xbox's future plans should be shared in the weeks and months to come.
