It’s being reported that Bioware’s upcoming RPG Dragon Age 4 will launch exclusively for new-gen consoles and PC.

The report comes from GamesBeat who cite the LinkedIn profile of the game’s former Lead Player Designer Daniel Nordlander. Nordlander’s employment history mentions his work on the game for a year between October 2019 and October 2020. However, it only lists PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 as platforms. In addition, GamesBeat say they’ve separately confirmed that EA has only planned the game for new-gen systems.

While maybe unsurprising to some, it’s worth noting EA is still working on cross-generational releases for the time being. Just one example is Mass Effect Legendary Edition which launched natively for Xbox One and PS4 back in May. Another example comes in the form of Battlefield 2042 on November 19 and will also support the older consoles.

However, GamesBeat note that this cross-generational development for Battlefield 2042 has caused some problems for the studios working on the game. It appears that the hope is that by the time Dragon Age 4 actually arrives, the newer consoles will have a large enough userbase to justify the decision not to launch on older hardware. We’ll have to wait and see.

We’re probably still quite a bit away from that launch mind. Though we’ve had pieces of concept art drip-fed over the past year for Dragon Age 4, the last truly substantial update came during last year’s Game Awards. A Bloomberg report back in February claimed it would focus on a single player, dropping live service elements. However, neither EA nor Bioware have officially confirmed these reports.

Perhaps we’ll hear something new on Dragon Age 4 at this year’s Game Awards, which are set to take place on December 9.
