EA Sports has revealed it’s exploring the idea of rebranding its iconic FIFA football series and giving it a new name.

The news came in a press release trumpeting the success of FIFA 22. Looking to the future, the company said “we’re also exploring the idea of renaming our global EA SPORTS football games. This means we’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world.”

FIFA 22 has certainly been doing the business, according to the rest of the announcement. Since the game launched barely a week ago, it’s already welcomed 9.1 million players. Those players have played 460 million matches of football and created 7.6 million Ultimate Team squads.

EA Sports concluded by thanking fans for their support of the FIFA series. “The future of football is very big and very bright. Our priority is to ensure we have every opportunity to continue delivering the world’s greatest interactive football experiences. Thank you again for your support and feedback on this year’s game. We look forward to creating the future of football with you.”

EA wouldn’t be the only studio changing the name of its flagship football series. Earlier this year Konami rebranded the PES series to eFootball. However, that game hasn’t gotten off to the best start in its first free-to-play outing as eFootball 2022.
