The PlayStation 5 has become the fastest selling PlayStation console in the UK after recently surpassing the 1 million sales mark.

That’s according to the latest data from GfK, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. The feat was achieved in August, just a little under nine months following the console’s launch. The timing is three weeks faster than Sony’s previous console, the PlayStation 4, achieved the same feat back in 2014.

This is despite the fact PlayStation 5 has, as with elsewhere, consistently battled stock shortages in the UK. People are still finding themselves waiting for announcements online before attempting to buy one, though it seems earlier issues with scalpers getting there first are not as widespread as they once were.

There were worries back in May of this year that stock issues of the console would carry on through into 2022. However, that was downplayed in August when CFO Hiroki Totoki told investors the company was “not concerned” about the global supply of semiconductors for the consoles.

Of course, sales have also been bolstered by strong exclusive games on the console. These include the excellent Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Deathloop. The trend looks set to continue following an excellent PlayStation Showcase last month. That event not only gave us updates on titles such as God of War: Ragnarok, but also revealed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine.
