Ubisoft has announced the Driver series is to make a comeback as a live-action TV show on a brand new streaming platform called Binge.

As per the announcement, the series will be a collaboration between Ubisoft and Binge. Binge being “an upcoming streaming platform showcasing original series and shows created for gaming fans”. The Driver series will be among the first of the new platform’s offerings, which seemingly won’t require a subscription.

The series will follow the game’s protagonist John Tanner. He’s described as “an ex-racecar driver turned undercover agent whose mission is to take down the local crime syndicate”. While no casting has been announced, it’ll be executive produced by Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman, Danielle Kreinik, and Genevieve Jones. They’ll work alongside producers Allan Ungar and Vincent Talenti from the Binge side of things.

The last we saw of Driver was 2011’s Driver: San Francisco. Developed by Ubisoft Reflections, it saw hero Tanner wind up in a coma following a car accident. Naturally, this allows him to possess almost any driver and any car in the city as he tries to put away the criminal who put him there. It had more than its fair share of nods to BBC series Life on Mars, so it’ll be interesting to see if this series takes a similar route. Or maybe it’ll eschew the odd sci-fi twists for the more “realistic” cops-and-robbers action of the series’ earlier games?

There’s no date for the Driver TV series specifically, but Binge will launch on “any Internet-connected device” in 2022. Stay tuned for more. In the meantime, let’s have a lovely bit of nostalgia with the original Driver: San Francisco trailer, why not?
