PlayStation has announced it’s acquired Firesprite as the newest member of the PlayStation Studios family.

The news was announced by head of PlayStation Studios Herman Hulst on the PlayStation blog. “Firesprite is a creative and ambitious studio that is exceptional at building incredible experiences that truly showcase the potential of our hardware. The team’s technical and creative capabilities will be paramount to growing our stellar catalogue of exclusive games, and I think you’ll be excited for what’s to come.”

Interestingly enough, Firesprite were actually formed by former members of SIE Studio Liverpool. Formerly known as Psygnosis, they were one of the most well-known UK Sony studios of the 90’s and 00’s. Some of the titles they worked on in that incarnation include Wipeout, Destruction Derby and G-Police.

Sadly, the studio was closed down in 2012 due to Sony “focusing our investment plans on other Studios that are currently working on exciting new projects.”  Some of those from the shuttered studio formed Firesprite in 2013 and created PlayStation 4 launch title The Playroom. This was then followed up with The Playroom VR a few years later for the launch of PSVR. Their most recent title, meanwhile, was The Persistence which launched on PSVR in 2018 before coming to other formats last year.

Firesprite’s MD, Graeme Ankers, added his own comments to the acquisition statement. “Now, as a first party studio, we know we have the full support of PlayStation in furthering our heritage of combining creativity and technical innovation to offer some truly unique experiences for PlayStation fans.”
