Red Dead Redemption 2's world is full of a wide variety of wildlife and people. From the untamed expanses to the streets of the towns and cities, there is no shortage of people, animals, and environments with which to interact. Players have spent hundreds of hours exploring the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 but, as is often the case with enormous titles such as this, a new secret has been uncovered. Reddit user CourierJackalope recently shared their first-ever experience of seeing an in-game cat holding a rat in its mouth.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was released back in 2018 after nearly a decade of development. This long-term commitment resulted in a game with an impressively sized map and large number of interactions players can have with NPCs and animals. Of these interactions, players who have gone through and played the game multiple times often report finding moments and scenes they had never seen before.

CourierJackalope shared this impressive captured moment on the Red Dead Redemption subreddit. In a classic example of a hidden moment in a game that has been out for a while, the commenters on the post generally react in surprise. This cat, one of many that dot the landscape in the game, was found in the small town of Strawberry. The rat within its mouth, according to the player, is still alive despite being in quite the predicament. This little detail showing how cats interact with their world and hunt for rats is an impressive feat in an already impressive title.

Little details can easily be missed in major game titles and this post is proof of the sheer level of detail this game has attained. Adding in a hunting dynamic to the cats of the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is completely unnecessary to the overall picture but it is an impressive marker as to what games can achieve. Part of this game's thrust was to add a layer of realism to the world and by adding in interactions and realistic behaviors, Rockstar successfully hit the mark.

Red Dead Redemption 2 players touch on their love of details such as this on CourierJackalope's post. There is one thing they agree on even more than their love of this detail: their desire to be able to pet cats in-game. Dogs and horses can be patted by John Marston and Arthur Morgan but not cats.

Though this seems like a minor detail, there have already been petitions by the Red Dead Redemption community to get this feature added to the game. In a game that boasts realism it does seem an anomaly to not be able to have the same level of interaction with cats as players have with dogs, but it was likely a tracking issue or a developmental hurdle that left this option out of the game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available right now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
