Battlefield 2042 PC-Console Crossplay in the Works

Battlefield 2042

EA and the Battlefield 2042 development team have posted an extensive blog to answer some of the community’s most burning questions about the game that was revealed on June 9th. Buried deep within general gameplay questions is a nugget of information about crossplay between PC and console players.

One of your most frequently asked questions is about cross-play. We can confirm it’s a function we’re looking to build and test for BF2042. To accommodate that, we’ve made the decision to move the Technical Playtest to later this summer so we’ll have the opportunity to test the cross-play functionality.

Crossplay is planned for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Players will have the option to opt out of crossplay if they choose.

While it’s not an official confirmation that the feature will make it for launch, it’s good news for players looking to expand the player base, particularly with the addition of 64- and 128-player game modes.

The post also provides fans with information about:

  • Specialists – This is the player character that is an all-new type of playable soldier that is equipped with their own Specialist Trait and Specialty and will have customizable Loadouts. According to the post, there will be 10 Specialists available at launch.
  • Maps – There will be seven maps at launch and the game is considered “the biggest and boldest title we’ve ever built”. The post details clustering and sectors to optimize gameplay while in Conquest Mode and how the team is optimizing and differentiating between 64- and 128-player experiences.
  • Vehicles – These will be more easily available and more squad-focused than in any previous game in the series. The post details how the Call-in System works, faction vehicles, and whether or not there will be naval vehicles and sea warfare (yes!).
  • AI Soldiers – These will be able to be used in multiplayer, co-op, and in solo gameplay experiences.
  • Technical Playtest – This is coming later this summer and the blog provides information about how to join, testing opportunities, and cross-play.

The entire blog post is a terrific read for fans of the series. Check it out on the Battlefield 2042 official site.
