As with any game, saving one's progress is an absolutely vital feature in State of Decay 2. Without this, players wouldn't be able to get far into the game, as they would have to start over. Naturally, after the first session of playing the game, players might be wondering how they should go about saving before they quit. For some reason, it isn't made very obvious how fans can save the game so they can come back later or reload to try again, but there's actually a good reason for this.

State of Decay 2's recent update has drawn many players back into the fold and attracted some new ones as well. Because of that, though, there are many players that aren't yet intimately familiar with the ins and outs of the game. Saving is one such thing that players will need to get used to in order to excel at State of Decay 2.

There is no way to manually save the game in State of Decay 2. Instead, the game will autosave whenever the player performs certain actions. On the positive side of things, this ensures that players will almost never lose their progress, but it does come with some drawbacks. There are a lot of reasons why players might want to manually save and load their game, whether that's to make different decisions or something else, and that is not an option here thanks to the autosave feature. It's also important to note that the autosave feature won't save the player's progress within a mission, meaning players will have to start a mission over if they reload the game.

Players can tell when the game is autosaving because the word "Saving..." will appear in the upper right hand corner of the screen. For players wanting to make the game autosave before they log off just to be safe, there are a few ways to go about doing this. The best way to force an autosave in State of Decay 2 is to switch to another survivor, but there are other actions that might trigger the autosave mechanic as well.

Players worried about losing progress can rest assured that State of Decay 2's autosave system is pretty reliable, and those that need added comfort could always force an autosave using the method above. Just make sure to finish any ongoing mission before quitting out or else progress on that mission will be lost entirely.

State of Decay 2 is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
