The third installment of the video game series based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels, 4A Game’s Metro Exodus released in 2019 and earned numerous award nominations and predominantly positive reviews, despite the PC version being an Epic Games Store exclusive for a year. Now that the game is available on every platform, it’s time for some Metro Exodus next-gen upgrades.
The PC version of the Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition released on May 18, and the PS5 and Xbox Series upgrades will arrive on June 18. The enhanced edition of the post-apocalyptic first-person shooter will be free for players who already own the PS4 or Xbox One version of the game. It will include the expected next-gen graphical enhancements like ray tracing and will run in 4K at 60 frames per second.
Additionally, the Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition will make full use of the unique capabilities of the PS5’s DualSense controller in order to enhance player immersion in the story-driven game. Thanks to the controller’s haptic feedback, each weapon will have a unique feel when fired, recoiling, reloading, or upon jamming. Metro Exodus also features a weapon customization mechanic, and even the subtle differences from adding a heavier stock or a suppressor, for example, will be felt via the DualSense.
The haptic triggers of the DualSense controller will also be used to differentiate between the firing modes of certain weapons, like the pneumatic Tikhar or the spring-loaded Helsin. The triggers can simulate the increased resistance when priming these firearms. For example, the Tikhar relies on high pressure in an air tank for its power, and as players fill the tank they will feel increased resistance in the triggers to simulate the growing pressure in the tank. In Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition, the PS5's adaptive triggers also help recreate the feeling of rowing a boat, operating machinery, driving vehicles, or opening doors.
The developers at 4A Games didn’t just make thorough use of the PS5 DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers. In addition to upgrading to 4K graphics at double the frame rate – 30 to 60 fps — and incorporating a fully ray-traced lighting experience, Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition now also supports 3D audio and takes advantage of the PS5’s faster loading times. The game’s HUD has likewise been minimized, relying instead on detailed animations to provide feedback so that players feel like they are truly part of the game world.
In Metro Exodus, players finally venture out of the confining metro to discover the truth about the nuclear war that devastated Earth and forced survivors underground. While the previous two games in the trilogy featured brief excursions outside, Metro Exodus allows gamers to truly experience the exterior post-apocalyptic world in the midst of a nuclear winter.
Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition is available on PC and releases for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on June 18.
