One of the most unlikely contenders for Game of the Year in 2019 was A Plague Tale: Innocence. The cinematic story-driven action game from Asobo Studio captured the hearts of players when it first released in May 2019, with the game nominated for multiple Game of the Year awards in the highly competitive year. For those who missed out on it at launch or those wishing to return to it before A Plague Tale: Requiem releases in 2022, A Plague Tale: Innocence is receiving a next-generation remaster next month.

A Plague Tale: Innocence was first released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in May 2019, where due to huge critical acclaim and an instant cult following, went on to become one of developer Asobo Studio and publisher Focus Home Interactive's biggest successes, selling over 1 million copies as of July 2020. The game was renown for its high quality cinematic storytelling, inspired by games such as The Last of Us and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, and the relationship of protagonist Amicia and her brother Hugo.

During the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase at E3 2021, Asobo and Focus Home Interactive announced that not only will A Plague Tale: Requiem release in 2022 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch (via cloud streaming), but it will launch as a day 1 Xbox Game Pass title. Today, Asobo made a return to Xbox's stage to announce a next-generation version of A Plague Tale: Innocence, slated for release on July 6th. The next-generation version boasts higher visual fidelity at 4K, 60 frames-per-second gameplay, 3D audio, and more new features. Better yet, the next-generation version will be free for owners of the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

What's even more exciting about the announcement of this upgrade of Asobo's beloved 2019 game is that the remaster was leaked to be coming to PlayStation Plus this July. This announcement, combined by the information gained from the recent leak, almost confirms that A Plague Tale will be coming to PlayStation Plus for PS5 owners next month. Owners of the game on PS4 will receive the PS5 version as a free upgrade, however it is unclear if it will be the only PS5 title included in next month's offerings. All will likely be revealed on June 30th, the last Wednesday of this month, which is typically when PlayStation Plus titles for the following months are revealed, unless Sony throws a wrench in things by hosting a surprise State of Play.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is currently available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will launch on July 8th 2021.
