As part of a new Q&A post on the PlayStation Blog, head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst has confirmed God of War Ragnarok will now launch for PS5 in 2022. It's a delay we all assumed was going to happen, but now it's set in stone. When discussing release dates during these uncertain times, Hulst said: "And for God of War, the project started a little later. So we’ve made the decision to push that game out to next year, to ensure that Santa Monica Studio can deliver the amazing God of War game that we all want to play."
Santa Monica Studio then expanded on the news over on Twitter, writing: "We remain focused on delivering a top-quality game while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of our team, creative partners, and families. With this in mind, we've made the decision to shift our release window to 2022."
Back on the PlayStation Blog and Hermen Hulst said: "With these things, something’s gotta give. It cannot be the quality of our titles, and it surely won’t be the health or the wellbeing of our amazing team." It is also stated that Horizon Forbidden West is "on track to release this holiday season", but that's not quite certain right now.

Quick, pretend you're surprised
Was never expecting this game in 2021, and honestly I'm a little relieved.
I can't remember a launch year with this many great games, with more on the way. I don't have time for this game on top of all the rest.
Glad the studio doesn't appear to be crunching their team too.
2021 wants God of War, but 2021 doesn't need God of War.
They didn't call it Ragnarok.
... And is cross gen, as well as GT7. Honestly though, one look at H:FW should be enough to show that isn't a problem
Was pretty daft to market this as a 2021 title. Was never going to happen, but now they will get some heat they didn't have to attract.
Glad the game and staff are being prioritised in this
Wow cause as if it wasn't obvious that was gonna happen lol
@The_New_Butler It wouldn't be surprising if that was their plan.
I DEMAND A RECOUNT !!!
*not really.
To be fair, I understand the concept of announced stuff early to sell more consoles, but this was like half an announcement. And it's not like they didn't have any other games to show, or desperately needed a reason to sell more consoles. The system will probably still be a rarity in stores when GOW comes out...
@Octane Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4 say hi 😂
Extremely disappointing stance by Sony to have God of War and GT7 as cross gen. Horizon I can just about understand. "We believe in generations"
That's looking dodgy now.
Surely this will be worth the wait, regardless of how long it is. Even Ascension, a somewhat stale entry within the God of War pantheon, was still a well put together game worth playing through. Santa Monica Studio has a deep understanding of ‘quality’.
This was to be expected. To be frank, I'm even surprised Horizon Forbidden West is still keeping the release window of 2021.
The pandemic has been rough on everyone, some more than the others. Delays now are expected from major AAA games.
Rather a later, better release than a buggy, unfinished mess.
Not surprised by the delay but am surprised by it coming to PS4.
Sucks but not really surprising. I think they probably really were aiming for this year before COVID, but as Hulst mentioned on the blog it was borderline impossible to do stuff like motion capture for a little while and it'll have delayed everything.
Playstation Studios confirmed it's coming to PS4 too, along with GT7.
Makes sense since PS5s are still hard to find, but I hope this is NOT them telling us that we will keep struggling to buy a PS5 deep into 2022!
@Octane yeah it's God Of War 5: God of War 🤣
They can take all the time they need!
@nessisonett Don't forget SMT, yeah, those examples are worse than GOW, which will still release within 2 years of its announcement I guess.
They can take all the time they need. Just bring us another great game.
2022 ?
At least that'll give me a chance to get half way through Returnal !
Take your time.im playing this masterpiece right now.so its cool.the g.o.a.t 👑 word up son
@Octane Game will arrive. Probably. At some point. Maybe.
Somebody in Sony’s marketing team should be fired and given a job at Xbox where they belong
It was allready known that it was this game or Horizon which should be pushed back.
@2cents I don't think we need the fanboy nonsense.
Not surprised about the delay. We’ve seen nothing specific about the game yet. Plus they really don’t want to crowd HFW and GoW too close together. I’m still confused as to whether this next GoW is cross gen or not. They specifically say PS5, so maybe there won’t be a PS4 version...
Wow, what an enormous surprise. I totally did not see this coming the moment they announced that 2021 release window.
Perfection and patience - the 2 things that have made Nintendo games so brilliant.
@LiamCroft I’m being facetious but if this is how you respond to fans of your site then I’ll gladly take my viewership elsewhere
I think Sony Santa Monica were the only people who ever believed it was coming out this year
You don’t say. I never believed it was releasing in 21.
I don’t expect Horizon to release this this year either.
A game gets delayed for a bit.
1st world problems, eh ?
The rest of 2021 is ruined to me.
I'll try to get a ps5 just before this releases. Don't need one until then.
I never would have guessed. I feel so let down. I TRUSTED YOU, SONY! I TRUSTED YOU!
The Jimbo wall of shame:
We believe in generationsSomeone (else) will make VR meaningfulNobody wants to play old gamesUpgrading customers to PS5 at unprecedented paceJapan is important to usGT7 LaunchRagnarok 2021Free movies in Poland
Technically it's not a delay. They 'shifted' the release window 🤷♂️
(And I'm half serious)
I’d be very surprised if HZD 2 doesn’t follow suit.
As much as I love Ratchet & Clank, I’m starting to think it was a blessing not getting a PS5 at launch. Very expensive paperweight at this point.
@nessisonett Will it be this year? No. Will it be next year? No. Will it happen someday? We believe that.
Let’s be honest they knew this when they released the trailer with 2021 in big numbers with no gameplay. They didn’t even need to, the PS5 would still have shifted like it has anyway, bizarre decision.
Losing fans
Losing exclusives
Losing your old way
PlayStation is dead. Bury it.
Nothing new here, I didn't expect a 3 year development cycle for a new God of war game, especially given the massive success of the previous one.
Too bad for the PS5 as a console though, as it really lacks games that are made especially for it... for now, year 2021 and even 2022, it can be safely named PS4 Pro 2... too long a time for a new gen console to rely mainly on "backward compatibility" games, 3rd Party games and have almost no AAA "new gen" exclusives to speak of...
@Play We'll always have Metal Gear Solid though.
And Jumping Flash.
I find it hard to believe anyone is surprised by this, I’m fact, I’d have been far more surprised if it did actually release in 2021. I find it hard to believe HFW is even being considered for this year. I won’t argue if it releases this year, but I’m doubtful.
Imo, it was most certainly expected. Since we have yet to hear anything about Ragnarok, it's quite obvious that a delay was inevitable. But oh well. I rather have them have enough time to finish their game instead of rushing it out because of the public's demand.
I remember calling this and being called ignorant or what not. Sad the game won’t be here this year, but feels good to be proven right.
Now let’s also see Horizon 2 slide into next year.
Expected it. Not gutted, got plenty of other games to play and I want another GoW that kills it just like the last one.
@Tharsman The mrs calls me a moron and an idiot and a half-wit and a f*cktard - and that's on a good day !!!
You want a medal ???
The PS5 should have been called the PS4 Pro 2 because it sure as hell doesn’t deserve its name.
Every eXcLuSiVe released so far could have been done on the PS4 easily. RnC may end up being the only game that wouldn’t work on the PS4.
Cross gen is disappointing but I'm not surprised. I will not however spend £70 on what is simply ps4 game with higher resolution and framerates.
@hypnotoad excuse me? Why you so worked up?
@Tharsman It was a joke, mate.
Well apart from the abuse I get from the old woman.
That wasn't a joke.
She's that horrible.
@OmegaStriver I’m sorry but if you think the PS5 should’ve been named PS4 Pro 2 then I can’t possibly imagine what internal specs. would meet your standards for a console in 2021 and the price tag that would be attached. It’s an upgrade in every sense of the word and that’s not even mentioning the Dualsense.
Yes exclusive games are nice, but many have come to expect that it’ll take some time for the big hitters to start releasing steadily based on past console cycles and most early adopters just want to future proof for the time being while enjoying QoL things like faster load times, quieter fan, stable framerates etc. Personally, between Astros Playroom, Demons Souls, Returnal & soon R&C i’m more than happy with the games so far since launch and actually glad lots of AAA titles are still going to PS4 so more people can enjoy them given all the supply issues
@nessisonett @Octane Has Beyond Good Evil 2 released yet? I kind of feel like it must have b/c it's been so quiet, but I don't recall it releasing. Did it get Scalebounded? I don't mean the 20010 BG&E2, I mean the 2018 BG&E2. 😝
If both GoW2 and GT7 are coming to PS4 I agree w/ @OmegaStriver and Pro 2. I've been calling it Proier Pro but I gotta admit Pro 2 does sound better. Very Apple. 🤷♂️
@SpicyTacos101 Sony did a lot of harm to itself early on when they decided to let fans think “we believe in generations” meant they were leaving PS4 behind. Their most zealot fans rallied a huge chunk of the community into thinking “cross gen is bad.”
They let that go too long, likely because they felt it was hurting Microsoft. Now too many are stuck on that mindset and it is backfiring on them. It’s still just a small vocal minority screaming this, both PS5 and XSX are doing very well with cross gen releases.
The cross gen thing has become a joke. Not because Sony is doing it. They should always have done it.
It's a joke because they lied about it, and because there's actually people who need their games to be exclusive or they seemingly lose some value.
@rjejr Wow, I totally forgot about that one too. Never actually played the original but the sequel’s been talked about for about 10 years!
@mariomaster96
I'm trying I really am 🤣🤣🤣
@rjejr BG&E2 is in the same boat as WiLD, remember that PS4 game? Remember Deep Down?
LOL!!! and it freaking continues. god damn the industry is freaking sad .
@MightyRedMachine "I will not however spend £70 on what is simply ps4 game "
Oh same here, I been very against the price hike but I can understand some what the native especially made PS5 games like Demon's Souls or Rift Apart. I however won't be dropping 70 on a upres PS4 game, that's just lunacy.
@munstre Which is an illusion and delusion.
If God of War Ragnarok was never announced as a PS4 game, and released this year, it would have been hailed as an example of the hardware of the PS5. Despite the fact that it could have run on a PS4 with enough tweaks. Despite it actually being the same game with or without a PS4 version.
With or without last gen versions, games like Halo Infinite, Cyberpunk, Mile Morales, and Forbidden West would still be the same games.
This is the same with all the impossible Switch ports. People were happy with games like the Witcher 3 and Doom, and considered them impossible on weaker hardware. The issue is that with all these games, there's nothing about the design of the game that would make them impossible on weaker hardware besides prettier graphics.
It's been this way for years. When a dev says "this game is only possible on X hardware" they are normally referring directly to the graphical fidelity. And you will still get the same high graphical fidelity on the PS5 as you would have otherwise.
@rjejr Pro Plus. Pro 2 doesn't work. It has no mojo. It just seems like a follow-up. Proier Pro seems like a revision. Pro Plus seems like an upgraded version of the same thing (even though you can't get the Pro Minus anymore.)
I think people are being shortsighted on just how significant making these games (still a year away from release) for both ps4 and 5 is.
By choosing to let last gen hold the new consoles back from a true transition to next gen, we won't see true ps5 games from these studios until nearly the end of the ps5s lifespan, and surely after sony cashes in again with a mid generation ps5 upgrade. This puts this trend continuing indefinitely between generations going forward.
Game development cycles have become nearly half decade affairs costing millions which puts games beyond the cross platform ones still being finished, out to 2026 or later. We were absolutely sold a console that basically improved loading times and added a graphically nerfed frame rate mode for cross generational games; Oh and offered us 3 ps5 only games.
They should have waited on the ps5, and my dumba$$ should have waited on buying it
But of course, I don't think anyone believe god of war is 2021 titles lol. I just hope it's a full ps5 games, I'm really annoyed at sony that didn't want to admit anything whether the game is full ps5 exclusive or still on ps4.
I miss early ps4 sony that honest to gamers, they even says whether games are true exclusive or just console exclusive, with expiration date for console exclusive.
Still 100% believe in the wisdom of Miyamoto:
"A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."
I don't think it was Sony Santa Monica's idea to slap the 2021 date on it. And even if they thought they could meet that deadline, I am thankful that they are taking time to make the best game possible and not crush their team in crunch.
Are people really moaning that a game is being delayed in the interest of quality? If you bought your PS5 with the intention of playing any game in the timeframe that was initially announced then you're pretty naive. It is the beginning of a new console generation. Delays are inevitable as developers adjust to working with new hardware. The price of being an early adopter is patience. If you want a huge catalog of new games then buy a system when it is 1-2 years into the cycle. Everyone complains about backlogs and PS5 has almost full PS4 backward compatibility. Enjoy those games with a mix of some new titles for the first year.
@munstre which mechanics of R&C and which PS2&3 games are we referring to?
@Octane Yeah but both Wild and Deep Down were new IP with little more than 1 announce trailer, BG&E2 is a sequel to a fairly well liked game that has been shown off in at least a couple of CGI trailers and has a big name associated with it. Ok yeah I forgot who, but you know. Was Deep Down in the original PS4 reveal with that scary head socerer guy? That seems about as likely as that Wii U game with the bird flying over the koi pond tech demo that no Wii U game ever looked anything close to. Still mad about that. Not as mad as Pikmin 4 though. How were you able to type a comment that short anyway? 🤷
@nessisonett BG&E was good. I played it on release, nice little 10 hour game with a bit of variety. Though I also liked both Sonic and Starfox Adventures so my opinion may not mean much. 😁
@rjejr You're not allowed to post short comments, but there's no rule against editing and deleting text
@NEStalgia Pro Plus would be good except PS+ is a thing. So a PS4 Pro Plus is just a Pro that comes with a 1 month trial of PS+.
Maybe "New PS4 Pro"? That's it, I'm calling it New PS4 Pro, that should go over well here. 😎
@Octane Argh, never thought of that. Of course my comments are more likely to get the "Sorry, this comment is too long" error message. 😝
The phrase I'm sick of hearing - "In these uncertain times"
@munstre "teleport the player almost instantly between different worlds as a central gameplay feature."
And how would such a mechanic get transposed to God of War? How would GoW use the SSD to change it's moment to moment gameplay beyond what we know?
"PS2 came out in 2000, and in 2001 it got games like GTA 3, MGS 2, FF 10, Ico, Jak and Daxter, DMC, Silent Hill 2"
First off, I'd like to point out that PS2 gen games are different beasts since the consoles like the N64 and the PS1 are just that underpowered that they couldn't hit the bare minimum for rendering a world. (I'll explain that soon).
Saying that, Jak and Daxter and Silent Hill 2 are not anything other than graphical improved games of older games.
GTA 3 is probably the only game on that list that couldn't be or wasn't already on the previous gen. That's obviously because of its open world design.
"The PS3/360 generation got games like Oblivion, Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Modern Warfare, Bioshock and Portal"
Again, there's nothing about most of those games in regards to world design or game design that would suggest they could only happen on the 7th gen.
Big games here are Dead Rising for number of enemies on screen, and Portal for the Portals.
It's funny we are mentioning Portal and Rift Apart. Since R&C has now finally got its own version of the Portal gun with the rift tether, why did it take two generations for the game to get its own portal?. If tech was the only factor that stopping games from expanding out from what they are, what happened there?
The issue is this. Game design plateaued. Once the hardware could effectively bring most game worlds and ideas to life, you need a once in a generation idea to really break the mold. And not all these ideas are fit for every game. Battle Royale games have only just taken off, but it would be unfair to say that they only happened during the 8th gen because the tech was there. The PS3 had a 256 person MMO shooter. The idea was just not as fun as it seemed for most people. So rather than hardware being the reason games normally limit to 16 person competitive MP or 100 person BR, it turns out that a limited design is just more fun.
Likewise, super fast travelling between worlds and really working that SSD sounds like a great idea and with some games it will be, but not every game needs to change to be like that and there are games, like GoW and HFW, or even Elder Scrolls and Fallout, that wouldn't normally make a staple mechanic out of the SSD function. It would just be used to make normal transitions less painful.
Edit: as a side note, it's worth pointing out that the most played games of the 8th gen are games like GTA 5 and Fortnite. GTA 5 is literally a 7th gen game, and as I pointed out, Fortnite could have existed on previous gens, and does exist on Switch. Newer hardware is no longer the driving factor in new ideas, and it certainly isn't a defining factor of fun or enjoyment.
2nd edit: did you change your original reply to me to slightly change it's meaning?
@rjejr New PS4 Pro Plus Series U
I still think Pro Plus sounds Sony/Apple.....Sapple....Applony....
My Applony has a first name, it's J-I-M-B-O
@Shepherd_Tallon Launch with this many great games? Where are you shopping cause I don't see them anywhere?
Totally not shocked. Wasn't expecting for a GOW sequel this year. In the mean time just downloaded GOW on the PS5 and it's amazing. I thought on the Pro was a better experience than the base, but on PS5 is way better.
I called it more than a year ago, when everyone else was hyped for a logo in a Sony presentation. Stop being sheep and simp for a corporation. I have 3 Sony consoles and over 700 games but I understand how corporations work. Wise up, people.
Be patient boy.
I'm perfectly OK with this and like I said on another Article there's still plenty to look forward to plus I have a rather large backlog too.
@SilkySmile89 I haven't even gotten around to playing God of War (PS4) at all despite owning it since launch. Being busy all the time really does suck sometimes 😅
@tselliot I mean it could be down to personal taste, as with everything. I got a ps4 at launch and had nothing to be excited about until Dragon Age, which was a cross gen title that released a year in. (People complained about that too).
So far on PS5 I've got Demon's Souls, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, with Miles Morales, Resi 8 and FF VII Intergrade as cross gen titles, and Kena on the way. Possibly Horizon before Christmas. Possibly.
I'm not someone who needs 10+ games per year, so this lineup is stellar for me.
@stevie85 if you have a ps5 why do you care? the ps4 install base is too big to ignore , but the also its obvious the ps5 version will be the much better one.
@Oscarjpc i don't think people are trying to have sex with sony , if they are then that would be weird , you clearly don't know what the term simp means then.
@twitchtvpat I just wish Sony was more up front about this. A couple of months back on one of their montage trailers. GT7 was listed as a PS5 exclusive. It's a bit dishonest. Same with God of War. Why not say at the time it was cross gen. Instead of being intentionally ambiguous. They announced Horizon as Cross gen almost straight away.
I get they need to hit the PS4 install base. But at the same time. They should not come out with stuff like "We believe in generations" when 3 of their most anticipated games are going to be cross gen. There's also the arguement to be made how much will the PS4 hold back these games and what compromises had to be made for them run on a PS4.
@Shepherd_Tallon Dragon Age was the game that finally pushed me from the PS3 to the PS4 as the game was clearly designed for the new hardware and the scaling back for the PS3 was a cut too far.
Trouble for the PS5 (ironically) is that the still for sale (and probably edging ever closer to 120 million), 2nd best seller of all time, edgy console.
If every PS5 owner bought a copy of a game and only 2/3 of the PS4 owners bought the same game, you're talking about a 10:1 sales ratio in favour of the 4. That financial deficit is something devs (certainly not the ones propped up by Sony) can't ignore.
There will come a time when the PS4 is so overwhelmed by a release that it'll eventually get relegated to having FIFA releases every year but not much else, but until then, the old girl has still got a lot of life left in it. I can vouch for a Pro with a fast SSD in the internal SATA3 bay makes a heck of a difference for load times & general performance (that and hoovering out the fan every few months!)
I'm also slightly concerned with the PS5 using its uber SSD to effectively work as a swap space for the Ratchet & Clank game spooling. Wonder what the MTTF is for one of those when it's constantly being accessed?
We'll still be buying ps4 games in 2025. Cut it off already.
@RubyCarbuncle You got to make time man. You just have to. It's a big departure from the original games. But it's worth it. The game is excellent.
@sanderson72 I agree with that point about the PS4 userbase. They can't just cut those sales out.
Plus, the PS5 exclusives are here. They exist. Everyone with a PS5 is getting what they paid for, and people with a PS4 don't have to make the jump just yet for the biggest sellers. Plus, Sony get maximum monies.
Win/Win/Win
We're all having this conversation with Ratchet and Clank less than 2 weeks away. 🤷♂️
@Shepherd_Tallon I think there are a few people who think that all new games should be 4K, 60fps and with ray tracing and haptic feedback but don't consider that many of these soon(ish) to release games have been in development for 2 to 3 years, when the PS5 specs were unknown, so of course they were targetting the PS4. In some cases, I suspect, it is cross platforming to the PS5 that is causing some of the delays.
The PS3 and the PS4 had fairly weak initial offerings at launch - people need to just give the PS5 time...
@NEStalgia Pro Plus is good, it just doesn't work for a console from a company that already has PS Plus, too many plusses.
Maybe when they announce the new Switch later today or tomorrow or the day after tomorrow or next week or at E3 - surely 1 of these insiders will get it right 1of these days - they'll call it "New Switch Plus". It did dawn on me last night that people wanting it to be called Super Switch - which does sound nice - don't seem to realize that automatically makes it next gen, see NES. 🤷
@rjejr What plusses does PS4 Pro Plus have? +$10 games? +another year for games? +low geometry performance mode?
We could go with Super PS4 then? It signifies next gen while still confirming it's an enhanced PS4. It's genius. It may not sound very Sony, but PS4 Pro Go doesn't make sense. We could follow music industry naming because Sony's into that, PS4 Pro feat. Cernydrive. We could just go Apple and call it "PS4" (2020 Newest Model).
@NEStalgia ""PS4" (2020 Newest Model)"
If they are going w/ that name they better hurry up before "Switch" (2021) gets announced any minute now.
PS4 Pro Go would make a nice Vita replacement, show Sony hasn't abandoned Japan. (Narrator voice: But it has.)
Has it occurred to you yet that at this rate "New Switch Pro", the mid-gen refresh, is probably going to have more "next gen" exclusives by Christmas than next gen PS5 is going to? MS was at least up front about the whole - generations are dead, our consoles are smartphones now - thing, way back in 2016 when Spencer basically said it. "He believes that fighting against the traditional console cycle is important to keep consoles relevant in a world where technology advances at a rapid clip."
https://www.theverge.com/2016/6/13/11915624/microsoft-xbox-one-s-pc-cross-platform-future-phil-spencer-interview
@Juanalf it will be interesting how they handle this are they going to have to price the PS4 version at $70 / £70?
We may as well all buy the PS4 version upgrade for free if not... And if they charge £70 for a PS4 game. 🤣🤣
@sanderson72 it was heavily heavily implied in the marketing that Ghost of Tsushima, FF7R and TLOU2 were the last big AAA PS4 titles.
No one expected games to stop coming out, obviously they were going to get ports of the latest FIFA and anything that could be scaled down easily enough probably for years to come.
But this is the first generation I remember where almost all the big name games are releasing on outdated hardware and holding the new generation back. PS4 games are being scaled up rather than PS5 games being scaled down, so we can never progress beyond where TLOU2 got to basically.
Yes, there’s been games, Zelda twilight Princess etc. But you wouldn’t expect to see Mario 64 on the Super Nintendo for example, and that’s what they’re essentially doing with Horizon and God of War. And again it’s almost all of them, not just one.
Also Sony’s main developers making their flagship games would know roughly what they should be doing for PS5 development, even 5 years ago.
@twitchtvpat yes the PS5 version will be better but it’s still essentially a PS4 game. We care because we want to play games designed for the newest technology, not decades old technology which was already out of date 6 years ago.
For a game to function on PS4 the only improvements the PS5 gets are essentially graphics. However if the devs didn’t need to make it for PS4 we could see vast improvements in map design, AI, control mechanisms etc.
If they’re going to continue this way they should take a ‘if it runs it it runs approach’ to PS4 and make games for Next Gen with a watered down cheaper cost port for last gen which allows people to see it and get the story - kinda like cyberpunk.
As it is they’re holding gaming back by doing this and can’t really insist on PS5 games costing more when it’s essentially just a shiny version of the same game on PS4.
@Tharsman they aren’t cross gen releases though are they. They are last gen games that run at a slightly better frame rate.
Astros playroom is probably the most impressive game on the system (didn’t play demons souls) because it’s the only thing that actually feels next gen in the way it plays.
@Shinnok789 I’m starting to wonder why either company went to next gen consoles rather than just Xbox two and PS4 Pro 2.
The technology is obviously there but they weren’t willing to go all in yet due to their install base. And if they’re just going to play upscaled PS4 games there was no need for anything more than a revision of PS4 tech.
Also asides from possible spoilers I don’t understand all these PS4 users championing games being worse than they need to be just so they can play them now. Unless they intend to stick to PS4 for life. I am in this position with cyberpunk and opted not to play an inferior version and instead wait for the PS5 update. I don’t see why people are being impatient here, surely they would want good PS5 games to play when they do upgrade rather than a shinier version of something they already have. They’re holding gaming back.
I don’t foresee any real change in quality of games for 5-8 years or so at this point. Think Sony were just being greedy with the PS5. Quite a cheaply made ugly system too, don’t think it will be remembered fondly. Seems like every second generation is the charm for Sony.
@Justin113 I can sympathise as to how it looks to PS5 owners that Sony have ignored their new console (not this first time that's happened cough vita cough) but it's simply not true.
The PS3 had some bloomin' awful exclusives in the first couple of years of life that looked like PS2 rejects (Untold Legends was a stinker!) - I remember playing more PS2 games via b/c on the old 60Gb fat one until Uncharted came out - and I'm sure that the PS4 had some pretty lame ducks in the first year or two as well.
But the games ARE coming for the PS5 - yes, in some cases they are going to be tarted up PS4 games because the evolutionary architecture is easy to upgrade on top of the PS4 code.
Until hardware can get into consumers hands, cross-gen will still be a thing and £450 is not a small amount of money (I'm ignoring the Digital Only Edition) never mind the ridiculous eBay, CEX & scalper prices.
As a PS4 Pro user, I have NO interest in upgrading to the PS5 at the moment. I'm waiting for Sony and some of the third party studios to showcase something PS5 only that wows me - nothing so far.
And that's the point; games that have an imminent(ish) release date are going to be cross gen because 1) they can be and 2) just for revenue purposes. 'Pure' PS5 titles are going to take longer and will emerge in the next couple of years at which point I and several million others will make the jump.
@Shepherd_Tallon Yeah, I just need validation that the PS5 I bought was worth buying or I will turn into a melting pile of tears.
@tselliot My friend, that sounds like buyer's remorse.
I don't know if you remember the first year of the ps4, but it was pretty weak. PS5 already has a better lineup. If the games that are coming out aren't to your liking though, alas, there's nothing to be done.
Just don't melt! 😂
@Justin113 i mean they couldn't predict covid was going to happen , that 100% hurt the console launch. lets face it at this point the graphics aren't going to get that much better then they already are , which is why they upgraded in other areas that the ps4 can't do. then again you or me hasn't even seen any of these games in action , so its pointless to complain about something we haven't really seen yet.
@twitchtvpat I get not complaining about something that isn’t out yet but I can’t see how these games aren’t going to be worse than they would be if developed solely for next gen consoles.
I mean, imagine if Super Mario World had to be playable on the NES. Or Mario 64 on the SNES.
I understand PS4 is at a better standard than older consoles were but it’s still old technology, that really was outdated some time ago now and is exposed by high end PCs (see cyberpunk ps4 v pc version) which is where the PS5 should be. So to have to accommodate it is going to hold gaming back.
I’m also not saying they should let PS4 die. I fully expect them to get versions of COD, FIFA, Assassins Creed etc for the next few years at least.
But traditionally the top next gen first party games move to the new console in order to bring gaming forward and encourage sales.
If Horizon and God of War don’t at least run terribly on a PS4, then they’re not nearly as good as they could be had they made it for the new gen. But it sounds more like they’ll be spruced up last gen games at this point. Look at every PS5 exclusive game from returnal to Astro. They all look far better and use more new features than the cross play games PS5 version. There’s a reason for that, they aren’t held back by decade old hardware.
RIP 2021 release window, but I'd rather they take extra time to give us an epic experience worthy of our wallets.
Looking forward to whatever they can show us at E3 2021, even if it's just another small teaser.
