Super Bomberman R Online will explode on PlayStation 4 from 27th May, publisher Konami has announced. The free-to-play 64 player Battle Royale will be downloadable from the PS Store, and will start life with some seasonal Metal Gear Solid content. “Season 1 is headlined by the addition of Metal Gear Solid veteran, Old Snake Bomber, obtainable with in-game ‘Bomber Coins’,” the press release explains.

This is a modern free-to-play title with all the trimmings, so expect a Battle Pass to be available day one as well, divided across two tiers. The Silver Pass is free, of course, but you can pod out for the premium Gold Pass for additional rewards: “The Gold Pass will be available for 800 Bomber Coins, currency that can be purchased in packs via the in-game shop or on the platform store. Bomber Coins are also offered as Gold Pass rewards.”

For those of you curious about the game itself, it’s a contemporary twist on the arcade classic: “Delivering an original Battle Royale experience, up to 64 players are spread across 16 starting battlefields. As levels are cleared and players are whittled down, the number of battlefields continue to shrink until the ultimate final battle to be the last bomber standing.” Sounds simple enough, but we suspect it’ll be a lot of fun.

There’ll be a Premium Pack available at launch which will include a number of skins inspired by other Konami properties like Silent Hill, Castlevania, and Gradius. That’ll cost you £9.99/$9.99, but is completely optional, obviously. The Premium Pack will also include some additional gameplay modes, including traditional Bomberman for up to 16 players and a team-based Grand Prix mode. Plenty to dig into here, then.
