Depending on which Twitter accounts you follow, Sony is stepping away from indie developers and has turned its back on the Japanese development scene. The company’s official sponsorship of Asobu is presumably just a ruse, then – this doesn’t fit the narrative at all, does it?
For those who don’t know – and, we’ll admit, we had to Google it – Asobu is a community hub for Japanese indie creators based in Shibuya, Tokyo. It’s a place for developers to come together, share ideas, and work on projects – a little bit like an independent YouTube Space but for game development.
As an official sponsor, we assume PlayStation will be providing financial support, knowledge, and publishing opportunities. It’s great to see the company supporting grass roots initiatives like this, and we hope it helps to cultivate some fun projects in the future.

I really hope this amounts to something. It might be my age but the PSP and PS3 generation were like a golden age of fresh ideas coming from Sony and third parties. I'd really like to see Sony take on board some talented indie devs instead of continuing to shed weight like they have over the last few years.

Kinda worryingly reminds me of Silicon Valley incubators but I’d like to remain optimistic and hope that Sony aren’t going to turn out like a lot of incubator owners.
I'm glad Sony is throwing more support to Indies, especially overseas so this definitely good news and changes the narrative when it comes to Sony and indies despite Sony always having a pretty good track record supporting the indie scene.
However! this does little to change the Japanese narrative as they still only have one Japanese studio and about 217 Western studios 😐 When they have maybe 2 or 3 development studios in Japan I'll know they mean business.
I think they felt the waves of negative impact on their brand (all that seemed to be out there was bad news) and they've actually had to communicate some of the good things they've done.

Nice to see that we're probably going to a large variety of games coming to the platform in between the AAA games and even the mid tier stuff.
It seems Sony is not the only Company Sponsoring Asobu as one of the other companies is ID Xbox. Currently Asobu has 5 partners with more coming soon .

We always talk about the Chinese but its not like the Americans are that great as companies. Google, Amazon, Uber, Disney, Microsoft, Apple they only know one way of getting into and that is by buying up everything remotely interesting.
Trying to kill of competition by force thats why i always laugh when i hear the bad things about Tencent they are just as bad as other American corporate companies.
