Mario Kart 8 is truly something amazing. While it may not do too much in terms of innovation on the series' tried and tested gameplay formula, it has smashed sales records left and right. Every time one looks away it seems that this most recent Mario Kart game has achieved something great, and that has never been more true than right now. According to a recent report, Mario Kart 8 is now the best selling racing game of all time in the United States, and its sales figure are only continuing to rise with each passing day.
This is obviously a major accomplishment, and not a position that is likely to be overthrown any time soon. Mario Kart 8 initially released in 2014 for the Wii U, but it is the more recent Switch version that has spurred most of the success. Many initially thought that this Mario Kart game would flop, but it has gone on to prove those speculations wrong.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe released almost 4 years ago now, but it still consistently tops charts for best selling games. Just last month, March 2021, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was shown to be the sixth best selling game. This is alongside titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Monster Hunter Rise, Outriders, and other new games. What's more, this statistic doesn't even include digital sales, meaning it may well have been much higher on this month's chart than what is shown. For a game that's almost four years old, this is incredibly impressive to say the least.
When just looking at Nintendo games, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the third best selling game of March 2021. Above it are the new Monster Hunter Rise and Super Mario 3D World, but it still managed to beat out newer and conventionally more popular games like Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In most of these statistics, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is actually performing better this month than in the previous month, implying that the game's sales are still growing somehow.
Humorously, some fans wonder where all of these Switch owners are coming from. One would think there would come a point where everyone that has a Switch already has Mario Kart 8 deluxe, but that doesn't seem to have happened just yet. For fans of the party style racing game, this is good news heaped on top of an even better game, as Nintendo is unlikely to forget the value of Mario Kart any time soon.
