There's no denying that Nintendo struck gold with the Super Smash Bros. series, but the concept is simply too good to be strictly limited to fighting games forever. With an insanely huge roster full of iconic characters throughout gaming history and a seemingly endless well of fan service for nearly every Nintendo franchise, it's almost difficult to imagine what could be next.

Most fans would agree that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the pinnacle of what the series is able to accomplish.  While a new, even more ambitious entry in the series is definitely a possibility, taking the Super Smash Bros. concept and adapting it into another genre would really turns some heads and could even end up attracting more fans than the series already has.

Super Smash Bros. Kart Racing

With its increasing number of guest characters from other series, fans can already make the argument that the Mario Kart games are already on their way to becoming a Super Smash Bros. karting series. As great as those cameo features are though, an official game bringing bringing Nintendo's biggest stars to the race track would be a dream.

A Super Smash Bros. kart game offers a lot more room for fresh design ideas than what fans might typically find in other racing games. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe did feature a few tracks based on series like F-Zero and Animal Crossing, but these tracks were slightly held back due to being adapted into the Mario Kart style. A dedicated racing game that manages to cater to fans of all of Nintendo's franchises could become one of the ultimate party games.

A Super Smash Bros. RPG

At this point, a good chunk of the Super Smash Bros. roster either originate from an RPG series or have been featured in their own spinoff RPG. With the way that some Super Smash Bros. trailers are framed, It would be hard to blame someone if a fighting game wasn't the first genre that came to mind.

it wouldn't be difficult to imagine the roster going on a quest to save the conjoined Smash-verse from an invading threat like Master Hand or Galeem. Super Smash Bros. games contain a ton of Easter eggs about its characters and the franchises they're from, but a fighting game can only show so much. An RPG would be able to delve deeper into the lore of each character and offer more interaction between them that fans would surely enjoy.

Super Smash Bros. Musou

FE Warriors

Koei Tecmo's Musou games share a lot in common with the Super Smash Bros. series already. The games feature a ton of characters for players to choose from and unlock and the games based on existing IP are often filled with references for hardcore fans to find. Nintendo and Koei Tecmo have formed a strong relationship in recent years, leading to a number of Musou titles based on Nintendo franchises such as Fire Emblem Warriors.

A Super Smash Bros. Musou title could end up being one of the most ambitious Musou games to date. With so many series to draw from, even standard Super Smash Bros. could end up beat in terms of roster size. It would also be fun to see characters like Olimar and Shulk mowing down hordes of enemies in a new style of gameplay.

A Super Smash Bros. Platformer

One of the genres Nintendo is probably best known for would be traditional platformers. Many of the company's most iconic franchises started out as platformers, so it wouldn't be too much of a shock to see Nintendo honor its platforming roots one day by using the Super Smash Bros. formula for a new side-scrolling (or 3D) adventure.

The series has toyed with the idea of a platforming adventure in the past with its Subspace Emissary mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This mode transformed the game into a side-scroller blended with standard Super Smash Bros. combat. While this mode had its challenges, it's one that fans are still hoping to see a return of one day. The door for Nintendo to bring their biggest franchises together in new kinds of games is always open and fans will likely be just as excited for them as they get for Super Smash Bros. announcements.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now on Nintendo Switch.
