Following reports of an upcoming remake of The Last of Us, fans took to social media to voice their opinions. The chorus of voices was not united, however, as many are not sure if this is something that is wanted.

When released, The Last of Us immediately captured fans with its narrative, along with excellent character development of the main protagonists Ellie and Joel. That release came 8 years ago, which leaves fans wondering why a game that came out in the PS3 era actually needs a remake.

Furthermore, The Last of Us was remastered for release on the PS4 a year later in 2014. Both the original and remaster earned an excellent score on Metacritic of 95. The Last of Us also earned many Game of the Year awards for 2013.

The Last of Us series has been in the news over the past year due to the release of the sequel. While earning Game of the Year honors in 2020, it was no stranger to controversy as fans rejected some of the plot points. It still earned a score of 93 on Metacritic.

One has to question why a remake now, and why this game. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a direct comparison to a game that was received incredibly well and is receiving a remake. However, Final Fantasy 7 came out on the original PlayStation, which is a tremendous drop in ability compared to the PS5. The same can be said for Resident Evil 2. Both remakes have been fairly well-received. A remake for a game should typically show the player what could have been. It's uncertain if that's the case with The Last of Us.

While catching some curious glances of players, others actually voiced their excitement. Some fans are excited to see The Last of Us on the PS5, bringing it over to the current generation of consoles. However, it appears that most players are approaching it with mixed feelings. This is to be expected when remaking a game that came out in the high-definition era.

Fans will hold their collective breaths as development continues on The Last of Us remake. No release date has been announced, and it's unclear even how far into development the game actually is. With a remake supposedly in the works and a new television series coming to HBO, The Last of Us is certain to be a topic of conversation for years to come.

The Last of Us is available now on PS3 and PS4.
