Grinding Gear Games’ upcoming action RPG Path of Exile 2 was first announced in November 2019 and, although the follow-up to Path of Exile does not yet have an official release date, the gameplay trailers released by the developer should keep players’ interest piqued until launch.

Path of Exile 2 will introduce a new storyline that consists of seven acts that serves as a second campaign running concurrently with that of Path of Exile. Both the original and new storylines will lead to the same Atlas endgame content.

The latest trailer for Path of Exile 2 reveals more of the action-packed gameplay to be found in the game, showcasing some of the varied environments and dungeons players can expect to explore. During the livestream event that premiered the new trailer, Grinding Gear Games explained a little bit of what the footage was showing.

During the second act of Path of Exile 2, players will pursue a caravan owned by a tribe called the Faridun across the Vastiri Desert. At the very beginning of the trailer, a large stone doorway blocks the path, leading players on an adventure into the Traitor’s Passage to unlock the doors and open the way for the caravan to enter.

Path of Exile 2 will introduce a new skill gem system, ascendancy classes, and improvements to the game engine, while also retaining all of the expansion content added to Path of Exile since its release in 2013. First, the game will introduce 19 new ascendancy classes, which are subclasses that give access to specialized abilities. Initially, these new ascendancy classes will be limited to Path of Exile 2, but once unlocked they will be accessible in the first game as well.

The skill system in Path of Exile 2 has also been completely reworked, moving gem sockets from equipment to active skill gems. These skill gems can have a varied number of sockets, up to a maximum of six, while items receive a fixed number of primary sockets based on their item class. These changes are intended to retain the depth of the previous Path of Exile skill system while simultaneously removing some of the frustration players experienced.

Additionally, the progression system of weapons and armor in Path of Exile 2 has been entirely redone, including new character models and animations. However, microtransactions that have already been purchased, such as cosmetic items and in-game content, will still be available. Changes to the game’s passive skill tree and other core game systems are also planned.

Path of Exile 2 is in development and does not yet have an official release date.
