Fractured Team Address Yesterday's Server Crash

It seems yesterday was no April Fool’s for Fractured. In short, a server crash affected the SpatialOS MMO. A recent forum from the team provided some additional context and what the road forward could mean.

If you’re not quite familiar with Fractured, it’s an open-world sandbox MMORPG mixing action combat with fully interactable environments. It’s meant to appeal to both competitive and cooperative players. Features include crafting, trading, a refined action combat system, and more.

However, all this came crashing down yesterday. The team communicated in Discord during the earlier parts of the day. They note that they’re in contact with SpatialOS engineers to understand just what exactly happened. Perhaps importantly, the forum post notes that world data and player data are safe. They note that a small rollback may be required, with no more than 30 minutes of lost progression.

While servers have been coming back online, they note that the issue, unfortunately, is out of their hands entirely. So what does this mean for players?

“It means that if the issue was a transient one, not to be seen again, everything is going to be alright tonight and perhaps for the whole test. If not, another crash might happen in 1 hour, 5 hours, 10 hours...

In case it happens again, the rollback is guaranteed to be minimal, but it will be there.”

The team seems genuinely concerned about this considering an alpha testing phase had recently launched. This winter alpha was actually delayed before getting rescheduled to start on March 31. The alpha includes more environmental features with some pretty significant improvements to terrain. The team notes they will continue working through the Easter holidays, but can’t make any promises that a repeat won’t occur.
