In news that’s sure to make you feel old, God of War II is celebrating its 14th anniversary this weekend. The game – which launched on the PlayStation 2 after the release of the PS3 – is widely regarded as a classic, with its larger-than-life set-pieces and overall mastery of Sony’s hardware. It also saw Cory Barlog take the directorial reins from series creator David Jaffe.
And writing on Twitter, he admitted that he had “no idea what the hell I was doing pretty much the entire time”. He added: “Every day felt like I was thrown on stage opening night to perform a musical that I had never even heard of, much less rehearsed. Fortunately, I was inspired at every turn by a brilliant team.”
One of our favourite memories of God of War II is the documentary included on the DVD, in which a clearly frazzled Barlog explains how to make a sandwich:
Barlog eventually left Sony Santa Monica and worked at a number of different studios, including Crystal Dynamics and Avalanche, before returning to PlayStation to direct the series’ recent award-winning reboot. As for what he’s working on now, well, we know God of War Ragnarok is around the corner – but it sounds like the developer has a lot more up its sleeve.

God of War 2 is the best of the series right next to 2018 in my books. It was so good.
@Deadlyblack Yes, once I heard that Cory was working on the 2018 one I knew it was in good hands.
I admit I wasn't the biggest fan of the original GOW games, mainly because I don't really care for Hack-and-Slash games, but GOW2 starts on such an incredible note that I had to see it through to end, I wanted Kratos to get revenge on Zeus, and it was all so gratifying when you finally get to pummel Zeus's face into a bloody pulp at the end of GOW3.
@Deadlyblack I'm still on the side of GOW3 being the best. Playing the Remaster is so smooth, so slick, so brutal, so enjoyable from start to finish. It is the pinnacle of this genre of games.
GOW2 is bloody brilliant, but everything it did, GOW3 did it better.
As for GOW(2018), frankly, as great as it is, it pales in comparison to the previous ones as a "God of War game". I really wish they'd gone the new IP route with it, there was too much forcing the GOW franchise in a game that didn't really have anything to do with it...
Man that was a really fun documentary to watch. I searched YouTube to watch the whole thing and I found this new GOW documentary by Sony. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ra_R-K_IoUc Can anyone recommend it? It’s almost 2 hours long! It’s cool to get an inside look at the game development process and to see some of the struggles Barlog went through being new to the Director position. I am the Director of Operations for a mortgage company and I am in meetings all day and Barlog explained exactly how I feel about being in meetings all day lol. It’s just a lot and can be mind numbing at times with all the information you need to carry in your head. Nice to see I’m not alone in that feeling!
@Olmaz I’m glad people have different opinions, but the God of War trilogy always just seemed like ok games. I feel like God of war 2018 brought it from good to amazing, and it also wouldn’t have been the same game if Kratos hadn’t been reflecting on past games, so I’m really glad it wasn’t a new ip
@SteveZ85
If you have any kind of even remote interest in game design its an entertaining watch
@Olmaz 3 was fantastic, I remember it blowing my mind when playing for the first time. I can't quite put my finger on it but I just remember something towards the end of the game that really bothered me. I can't remember if it was the story or what lol.
I need to replay it to really jolt my memory.
The man's obviously a genius.
Cory’s great but needs his Twitter revoked for breaking my heart by hyping and teasing Ragnarok without legitimate news
If that Balrog gonna read this, than remember:
Remove shaking camera, remove other weapons than Blades of Chaos, remove that stupid child and you cannot miss a target.
I find the original trilogy a bit hackneyed and it falls into many many traps of 2000s ‘ow the edge’ tropes. That being said, God of War II is easily the best of the trilogy and I did find myself quite enjoying it. A lot more than the other two anyway.
@SteveZ85 that might be my favorite gaming documentary
I would love Bluepoint to give the first two games a polish in the same way as the uncharted trilogy. 3 already had a re-release but the first 2, man, would be a day 1 for me.
Still my favourite GOW game, would love to see this remastered from the ground up on ps5. Imagine how amazing that would be.
@Olmaz
Agreed. I enjoyed GOW 2018 but i preferred the original trilogy much more. God of war 3 is my favourite one. Platinumed that as well
@JustPlainLoco at the time when the game was new my cousin to the final boss and beat him. Then he’s pummeling Zeus and he’s at it for 5 minutes. He looks over at me and ask why it’s not stopping. I tell him he has to keep going until Athena shows up lol. He’s at it another 5 minutes and I tell him it took me that long when I did it after 15 minutes I tell him to stop pressing buttons. The cutscenes starts and he bursts out with laughter calling me every name in the book. Good times LOL.
@djlard So essentially remove many key aspects that made GoW 2018 what it was.
GoW 2 was potentially the peak of the series for me. 3 was also fantastic.
The combat was at its best and the puzzles/platforming of the games added more meat to the gameplay.
Probably in the minority here that thinks GoW2018 is a tad overrated (though agree the franchise needed a refresh after the stale Ascension). Hoping the new Ragnarok game can keep the cool new setting, but have puzzles that remind me of Hera's gardens and platforming that's more involving than following a O button prompt.
One of the g.o.a.t games.a masterpiece.word up son
The first time I played God of War 1 and 2 was on my PS Vita. Love both games but 2 is amazing!
Still 3 had the best boss battles
God of war 2 is really good, I like the more human size boss, it's a nice change of pace from the big monster boss from the first one, the third gow many gods boss is good as well
Mini sex games aside (why???), the original games are brilliant.
I first played them on PS3 (HD Remasters) and was blown away. Been a fan ever since.
I liked the 2018 game but those original three games will never be topped IMO.
@Weebleman - Bluepoint already remastered GoW 1 and 2 for PS3.
@AdamNovice And return it to its glory OR keep it, but kill Kratos (it is either way inevitable, because he feels older than Diablo's Decard Cain) and close series.
@AhmadSumadi - Oh my god that's funny, truly you are evil, but man that's funny as hell, anyone who can dupe someone for 15+ minutes in such a creative way as that, is worthy of my respect.
@Shigurui I completely forgot about that!
I liked the trilogy much more than gow4 for two reasons: Gow4 is not brutal at all (most enemies don't even have blood) and the enemy variation is awful (most enemies are just reskin). I hope they fix these two in the sequel.
Amazing game. I first played it and the first God of War on the PS3 with the God of War collection. These are a few of the games i actually achieved a platinum throphy (not a trophy hunter my any means).
I still have to get around to God of War (PS4). I have it still sealed, along with Bloodborne and so many many more. I hate having the money to buy games but not the time 😠
@Weebleman - I think a lot of people forget Bluepoint remastered those games. They were on top form that generation with Ico, MGS and GoW remasters. Their PS3 SotC remaster was horrible though, glad they got to redeem that mess with the PS4 version.
2018 and GoW2 are 2 of my favorite games. Amazing.
@Shigurui It was not horrible i played through it and it was fine.
@djlard Shut up.
@SpicyTacos101 I think they are going to throw a ton of curveballs. The first game did not follow the script and this one wont either.
@PhantomMenace84 Even Ascension has moments. Not perfect but still has some great fights.
@Coltaine22 I liked Ascension too. Gets a bad rap, undeservedly IMO.
I still have my special edition GOW Ascension Super Slim White PS3 console and GOW Dualshock 3.
@Olmaz 3 Yeah same here, 3 is also my favorite game in the series followed by the reboot. The story for 3 was so simple yet satisfying, it was pretty much obliterate anything and everyone that moves or is in your direct path.
@Coltaine22 - I assume it eventually got patched then because it was all kinds of broken at launch. The framerate was awful, it had terrible input lag, Wander would inexplicably stagger like a drunk and fall off Colossi with full stamina. It was a mess.
As much as I liked GoW games, I absolutely hate puzzles, so far from a masterpiece for me.
I question why so many games go through development hell and then I read articles like this - for every God of War 2 there is a Bloodlines 2 (and so many others). Dear kids - if you want to work in the games industry, become a great project manager - these skills are much needed in the industry
@Coltaine22 interresting opinion.
GoW2 is oddly the only one of all the GoW games i haven't played, and at this point it's unlikely i ever will even though i have the GoW collection on PS3 disc somewhere.
I hope they can find a way to return to Greek Mythology with a fresh new twist. The Norse GoW setting was extremely uninteresting to me and came across as them trying to throw away all of the previous entries in the series in a disrespectful way.
@Juanalf In the end i thought he was the biggest ass**** though how he tied the girl too the gate was a little too much for me. I tried so many times too get through the gate without killing her. Thats why i like Nariko from Heavenly Sword so much better.
