Nintendo Switch Pro Will Have OLED Screen, 4K TV Output Per Report

Just in time for the Holidays

In a new report by Bloomberg, the site is reporting that Nintendo is working on a new Nintendo Switch model, often called the Nintendo Switch Pro, which will feature 4K output as well as a Samsung OLED screen. The Japanese company is reportedly aiming to release before the Holidays this year.

Bloomberg is reporting that the new and improved Switch Pro will include an OLED screen, which will be a 7-inch, 720p display from Samsung, with mass production beginning in June. The report mentioned plans to have panels start to ship to assemblers in July. Bloomberg are reporting, citing sources familiar with Nintendo's plans, that the new Switch Pro model will use a "rigid OLED" panel, which is a cheaper version than the type commonly used in smartphones.

The report states that the new Switch will also be slightly larger than the regular Switch model, measuring the screen at 7-inches diagonally.

Crucially though, as more and more consumers adopt 4K televisions and displays, the new Nintendo Switch Pro model will feature "4K ultra-high definition graphics" when hooked up to a television, improving upon the existing 1080p resolution output fo the current Switch model. Bloomberg says this "could intensify a longstanding complaint of developers, who have struggled with the difference in resolution between handheld and TV modes and now face a bigger gap between the two."

Rumors and reports of an enhanced model of Nintendo Switch have circulated for years, especially as competitors Sony and Microsoft ramp up their "next-gen" consoles, releasing the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series of consoles last year, respectively. The Nintendo Switch lags behind from a power standpoint, and the gap only widens with the release of these new consoles, as well as the pace of PC tech outstripping all console manufacturers at this point.
