The Nintendo Switch has certainly made itself a haven for indie titles over the past few years, and repeatedly puts a focus on new and upcoming games with Nintendo Indie World. The Nintendo Switch is about to add another indie title to its collection with the announcement of Nadir, a dark JRPG from Poland-based Shockwork Games.

Founded in 2017, Shockwork Games strives to create games with an original atmosphere. This is definitely the case with the first game the studio released, Alder's BloodAlder's Blood is a dark, turn-based, tactical game that released in 2020, also on the Nintendo Switch. The studio's return looks to continue the trend of dark atmospheric games.

Nadir is a dark JRPG that is directly inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy. In Nadir, players control a team of three powerful but flawed characters representing the deadly sins. So far, these are known as The Poet, The Leader, and The Virgin. There are multiple ways to customize each character's skills to use in the game's turn-based combat. Players descend through the hellish city of Nadir with procedurally generated maps to reach a mysterious power at the bottom.

The art style is especially unique, and many players might pick up the game just to see it in action. Frank Miller's Sin City and Mike Mognola's Hellboy are apparently big inspirations for the monochromatic scheme. The art and atmosphere of horror games is incredibly important, so hopefully Nadir will be able to accurately reflect the grittiness of all the fire and brimstone present in Dante's Inferno.

Another special aspect to this game is the developer's plan to provide extensive modding support. While players may not get as invested as the modders for the immense Skyblivion mod for Skyrim, the developers look forward to seeing what fans create.

While Nadir is looking to have a 2021 release, Shockwork Games has said it plans to only release the game when it's ready. Considering that Alder's Blood was seemingly well-received, players may have high hopes for Nadir. For fans who look to have more mature titles to play on the Nintendo Switch, this might just be a game to follow.

Nadir is in development for PC and Nintendo Switch with a planned 2021 release.
