Fortnite pledges to improve £10 monthly subscription offering

And gives a free emote after teething issues.

Fortnite maker Epic Games has pledged to improve the game's £10 a month subscription offer, ahead of revealing its third exclusive free skin.

Fortnite Crew, which costs £9.99 a month here in the UK and $11.99 in the US, offers a 1000 V-Buck stipend and exclusive skin pack every calendar month, as well as unlocking the current battle pass.

"It's been great seeing players jump in with new Outfits like Galaxia and Green Arrow, and we're working to make your subscription an even better experience month in and month out," Epic Games said in a blog posted last night.

"As part of our commitment to deliver Fortnite Crew members the best experience possible, our team is working hard to eliminate current issues, prevent future ones, and bring more cool content and features. We're not quite ready to announce who's in February's Crew Pack just yet, but we can say it's a new face from the world of Fortnite that players should look forward to! 🦊🤫"

Early issues experienced by subscribers include complications unsubscribing on Xbox, and a delay in recieving V-Buck rewards for January. To compensate, Epic announced it would give all subscribers a free emote named "Members Only", which lets you and another player exchange a secret handshake.

As someone who plays Fortnite a lot, I subscribed to Fortnite Crew to see how worthwhile that pricetag feels. Things began strongly, as November brought the eye-catching original Galaxia skin I've ended up using myself quite a lot and seen plenty of others wearing in lobbies and Party Royale. Subscribing on day one also meant you got the current season's battle pass the day it went live, meaning you were only paying a couple of extra quid for Galaxia and £6.50's worth of V-Bucks.

Roll into January, however, and with the battle pass already unlocked, the £10 subscription suddenly felt a lot more threadbare. As well as another 1000 V-Bucks, January subscribers got a Green Arrow skin, showcasing the hero from DC's popular TV series of the same name. It's a detailed skin, but one I personally wouldn't have bought as I have no interest in the character. I began to think about whether it was time to unsubscribe.

Galaxia and Green Arrow.

Perhaps more frustrating, Fortnite promoted its subscription in mid-December by pointing out you could sign-up to Fortnite Crew at that point and get both December and January's skins in one billing cycle. And because the cost of the current battle pass is refunded if you do subscribe, this method is arguably the better option.

I get the feeling a growing number of subscribers will also realise there's nothing to stop them unsubscribing now and then re-subbing late in February to get both February and March's packs in one billing cycle, as well as the next season's battle pass when it arrives in mid-late March. Perhaps that's why Epic has now said it is working to improve the subscription, and why it has highlighted that February's skin will be another original Fortnite character rather than a tie-in. Time will tell.
