Time for trainers to get some collecting in, because Pokemon Sword and Shield is starting a new Max Raid event. Running throughout the weekend, the special occasion has a chance of shiny versions of certain monsters appearing in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

The main highlight behind the series is collecting, and catching the best shiny types adds an extra layer to that challenge. Unlike most Pokemon that roam around, shiny forms are extremely rare and have a different color than normal. Max Raids, on the other hand, are a new feature to the famous series which have players teaming up in groups of four to take on dynamax Pokemon. For a short time, this event combines these two elements so players work together to catch massive, shiny Pokemon.

In this case, there are two creatures that have a slightly higher likelihood of appearing as their shiny version. It is the cheeky squirrel-like pokemon, Skwovet, and its hungry second evolution, Greedent. While these characters are typically easy ones to locate early on, shiny hunters rely on tips to locate the rare forms. If players tune in for the Max Raid event, they will have a 2% chance of encountering the alternate version. However, whether or not the dynamax Pokemon is going to be shiny cannot be determined until after the battle begins.

Players will know they have found a shiny type by the color of each of the two available Pokemon. Shiny Skwovet has reddish fur in comparison to the normal grey, and Shiny Greedent's body is of a cream-complexion. Though, these two are not the only Pokemon developer, Game Freak, is making available during the Max Raid event. Players can also catch dynamax Cherubi, Foongus, Amoongus, Morelull, and Shiinotic. But they need to act fast, because this special activity is only going to be running until Sunday, January 10.

Max Raids are a fun multiplayer activity in and of themselves, so more events utilizing the mechanic are usually popular. Pokemon Sword and Shield came out over a year ago, so for those still enjoying the monster hunting RPG will be looking for more activities to pursue. Shiny hunting is a process that involves low odds and persistence, so it is great that chances are being boosted. And even if players need a break from Skwovet and Greedent, there are plenty of others to hunt for.

Nevertheless, some trainers will likely have some disappointment given that only two Shiny Pokemon are up for grabs. On top of that, Skwovet and Greedent are rather common, so excitement could be rather minimal. Since players cannot even tell if the Max Raid has a Shiny type, there will be a lot of grinding. Frustrated gamers may drop out of the match when they realize it is not a Shiny, causing problems for teammates. But new events for Pokemon Sword and Shield players should provide some fun while they wait for any new series releases coming to Nintendo Switch.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is currently exclusively available for the Nintendo Switch.
