Even with DLC continuing to be released some players still haven't figured out one of the toughest puzzles in the game. The Desolation Cube may look like background scenery at first, but it's so much more. While there's no easy algorithm to solve this cousin to the Rubik's Cube, players with the know-how can still get it open to enjoy the mind-blowing amounts of loot within.

Locating The Desolation Cube

Players will need to get towards the end of the game before they can even consider taking on this puzzle. It's the ultimate way to gear up for the final showdown but not all players will understand how to even use it to do so. The cube is named after the area it can be found in – Desolation's Edge. It's quite massive making it hard to miss once players spot it on the horizon.

Solving The Puzzle

Pat Sajak isn't going to be any help here; players are going to need lots of firepower to open this ominous floating cube. The only way to open the cube is to shoot the corresponding side of the cube with weapons that deal every kind of elemental damage. This includes Cryo, Corrosive, Incendiary, Non-Elemental, Shock, and Radiation. Each side of the cube has a specific symbol that indicates which side must be shot by which elements. Impatient players can just fire with each weapon on each side until the cube opens.

If players don't have each type of gun? The cube isn't opening. Period. Players can potentially head to their favorite vending machine (or just any that are nearby) and attempt to purchase whatever weapons they lack as needed. Players can also attempt to hit up strong loot spots and get lucky with what weapons they receive. Once they return and open fire, the cube will eventually open up dropping extreme amounts of legendary loot.

There Can Be Only One...

Desolation Puzzle Dropping Loot

It is important to note that the Desolation Cube cannot be farmed, at least not traditionally. A player can only ever open the cube once – that's it. The only way for players to experience this drop more than once is to join the party of someone that has never opened the cube before.

It's also worth noting that the loot's quality and quantity can be affected as well. The difficulty currently faced by the host part is what influences the decision. Players who want to get the most from their puzzle-solving should consider having a host going through as a True Hunter or that is in Mayhem Mode. Each player will always receive the same legendary items when the cube opens as the rest of their party members.

Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Xbox One, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
