For many players that managed to secure an Xbox Series S or Series X, Gears 5 might one of the gaming experiences enjoyed since launch. While the game originally released in 2019, Gears 5 received a substantial update with the launch of the new Xbox console, improving load times and overall graphical fidelity. Now it seems The Coalition has more in store for the latest entry in the franchise, revealing a new story expansion.

The newest piece of DLC is called Gears 5: Hivebusters, named after the popular comic book series of the same name. This expansion will have players taking on the roles of Lahni, Keegan, and Mac from the Gears 5 Escape Mode as they take on a mission as Hoffman's newly dubbed Scorpio Squad. According to The Coalition, this campaign will be about 3 hours long, feature up to three-player co-op, and add 16 new achievements.

Gears 5: Hivebusters will release on December 15 for $20, but The Coalition has a surprise planned for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. The Hivebusters DLC will be the first campaign expansion that will be offered free of charge for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, day-and-date with the release on the 15th.

Alongside the announcement of Gears 5: Hivebusters, The Coalition announced that players would also be able to purchase Gears 5: Game of the Year Edition on December 15 as well. For $60, players will get both the base version of Gears 5 along with the Hivebusters DLC, as well as the Halo Reach character pack, and a 30-day experience boost for the game's multiplayer mode. This Game of the Year Edition will only be available digitally and is included with Game Pass Ultimate.

Hivebusters may be the only paid expansion for Gears 5, but that doesn't mean the game hasn't received content updates. Since its release, Gears 5 has had a plethora of maps and characters added for use in both co-op and competitive multiplayer. Most recently, players were given the opportunity to play as the WWE Raw Tag Team Champions The New Day in both Versus and Horde mode.

While many players will likely be excited to hope back into a Gears narrative experience, it's also likely disappointing that it won't continue the stories of Kait and the other protagonists from the original campaign. It seems that players will have to wait until Gears 6 inevitably releases to see how Queen Reyna and the rest of the Swarm are ultimately defeated.

Gears 5 is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
