Square Enix has announced SaGa Frontier Remastered, a remaster (duh) of the sci-fi JRPG that launched on PS1 all the way back in 1997. It was never officially released in Europe, so for a lot of players, this will be their first chance to experience the adventure.
Much like other games in the SaGa series, SaGa Frontier has multiple playable characters, each with their own story. And Remastered is actually adding an eighth hero named Fuse. It'll also feature new events and cutscenes, plus a 'high speed' mode. It's set for Summer 2021.
Even today, SaGa Frontier boasts a unique art style with some clear 90s anime inspiration. The game was very well received in its native Japan, but reviews were a little lukewarm when the title hit North America in 1998.
Still, this should be one to look forward to if you're a fan of 90s JRPGs.

I remember renting this and not really enjoying it, but maybe it would be worth another look
I remember playing this and not liking it, the story and gameplay is so weird compared to others squaresoft titles on psone back then.
I think square should remaster final fantasy tactics instead, or even brave fencer musashi.
This was pretty mediocre at best. There are so many better Square classics that could be getting the remaster treatment instead.
Considering this never got a UK release and Saga Frontier 2 was one of my PS1 fav RPG's this is an early Christmas present as far as I'm concerned. Who needs the PS5!? Saga Frontier!!!!
I found the sequel to be a much better game with a far more compelling story.
Glowing reviews from the comments section then!
So random! If this obscure old PS1 JRPG can get a remaster, then maybe there’s still hope for Xenogears...
Haven’t played it, but I remember the screenshots in magazines from the game were gorgeous back in the day!
Unfortunately this remaster has the usual ugly mobile aesthetic...
Know next to nothing on this. A Chrono Trigger remake though? Hmmm.
Off topic, will the quiz be coming back soon?
Oh god, i barely remember playing this or a sequel....
What i do remember is it was so bad.
Did like Saga:Scarlet Grace but it flew completely off the radar for a long time before I bought it, I'm actually surprised SE has been giving this franchise this much attention since it's seems pretty obscure
@Ear_wiG
Hopefully with a new translation.
Well Now This Is a Surprise And They Added The Cut Content That Wasn't In The Original Hope They do the Same For Saga Frontier 2 Next.
Vagrant Story next please!!!!
I’m all for this. Better that we get some strange and obscure games remastered and they get a second chance than we get the shudders mobile ports of Final Fantasy.
Damn outta the blue and this is sick af! Keen!
@Shepherd_Tallon Would love a full-on remake of this amazing game, Vagrant Story. Very unique combat mechanics, way ahead its time (Fallout 3...). BluePoint, get on it!
Makes sense considering they've just recently remastered the Romancing SaGa games, except the first oddly.
@nessisonett it pains me that Square Enix didn't put in the work to fix those PC versions like for Chrono Trigger.
SF1 was basically released half finished - if this is remastered I hope they restore the missing storylines etc.
Suikoden or chrono cross please
@MrGilly69
Definitely Chrono Cross.
That game was absolutely mesmerizing. I’ll probably get shot for saying this, but I actually think it’s better than Trigger.
@Ear_wiG Oooh, a full on remake. Now were talking. This is "wildest dreams" territory.
Would love to see it happen.
I'm still waiting for my Radiata Stories remaster...
@Shepherd_Tallon But it’s the kind of game that’s definitely in Bluepoint’s wheelhouse: avant-garde dark fantasy. After playing this Demon’s Souls remake, my brain is exploding over thinking about what Bluepoint could do next! 🤯
@wiiware yeah it was weird, but that was a long time ago. I would like to try it out again and see what i think. It doesnt seem like it was a very deep rpg from what i remember, but i could be remembering wrong.
@Ear_wiG yes xenogears would be great. Ive been hoping for a remake or remaster for that one for a long time. Such a great rpg, i liked it as much as FF back in the day.
@Shepherd_Tallon vagrant story was an awesome game. I really liked the combat system in it. Parasite Eve had a very similar system if i remember correctly. Really enjoyed both of them games.
@AdamNovice chrono trigger remake needs to be done yesterday. All that needs to be said on that.
Ps1 remake? Cool lets do suikoden next!!
@ellsworth004 Xenogears would be a good choice for remaster. It’s a massive game, which I think rules it out for a remake. But they ported it to PS3 and PSP back in the day, so at least give us that on PS5! A remaster with zero load times, better resolution, and 60 FPS would be AMAZING though 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
And yeah, One of my favorite RPG is of all time! Such a good story, and the combat system is amazing. And giant robots!
@Ear_wiG been so long since i played it, but i can remember really loving it. During battles could u do combos? I seem to remember that.
@TheRedComet That's a bad take, but I definitely can understand the appeal of Cross.
I've replayed Chrono Trigger probably close to a dozen times over the years and will never get tired of anything in that game. 🥰
@ellsworth004 @Ear_wiG Well, now I've dug out my old copy of Vagrant Story and I'm trying to make space beside my PS5 for my PS1...
@Shepherd_Tallon Nice! I stupidly sold my copy years ago because it was available digitally on PS3. But now my PS3 is having that HDMI "no signal" issue and appears to be unusable... Let's get that port onto the PS4/PS5 store Sony!!
@ellsworth004 Yep the primary battling system (i.e., sprites) in Xenogears had that amazing combo system along with the Deathblows (I think...?), which was just SO fun back in the day. And the robot battles were pretty fun too, minus the fuel management. Overall such a fantastic game!
@jrb363
lol 😂
I’ve played through both about a half dozen times. I do think that Trigger has far more depth to its characters (makes sense; Cross had way too many characters to mess with) and I prefer that aspect of Trigger.
The reason I mainly prefer Cross is it’s story arc. The story is really, really weird and the structure it is presented in a very unique way that not many games try to do anymore. I love RPGs with really unconventional stories and while Trigger’s story is unique, especially for its time, Cross’s tale always resonated more with me as a teenager when I first played it.
Plus the music. God that wonderful soundtrack. Trigger’s soundtrack is amazing too, but Cross’s soundtrack is still my favorite video game soundtrack of all time.
Truth is that both games really compliment each other. Trigger gives you some amazing memorable characters that you will never forget and an exciting story from start to finish. Cross fleshes out some of the more underdeveloped plot lines in Trigger while spinning a tale that seems like it’s going off the rails at times but all comes together in a fascinating way.
Both games have fantastic major villains who are compelling and sympathetic, Magus for Trigger and Lynx for Cross. And my personal view is that a story is only as compelling as its main antagonists.
@Ear_wiG
The story of Xenogears is fascinating too. Especially it’s brave take on religious radicalism. Games are afraid to touch that today and it’s crazy that a game released in the West during the 90s dealt with it in such a mature manner.
It’s a shame that the translation is so god awful that I had to consult wiki pages to go back over the game’s plot after I finally played it back in 2007 or 2008 lol.
@wiiware
Brave Fencer Musashi remastered would be awesome.
@Gamer83 brave fencer musashi, i havent thought about that game in years! What a great game that was.
Hard pass for me, don't have time to play retro games I never got into when they were recent.
Physical or no sale i waited for FF8 remastered and i can do it for this.
@haoie @ the end of the trailer it says "New events and cutscenes not implemented in the original" so it certainly sounds as if the cut content will be included...
@ellsworth004
I didn't have a PS1 so I only played a little bit of it at a friend's house. Good stuff from what I remember, though.
it's not a good game. s-e has no issues remastering mediocre titles, but chooses to ignore the classics like vagrant story, xenogears and parasite eve? lol
@TheRedComet Yeah it's some heavy stuff. I was pretty young when I was into it, so probably didn't appreciate the nuances... but it sounds like some of it was lost in translation then? Whatever the case may be, we need it ported to PS4/PS5!!!
