Co-op in video games, particularly couch co-op, saw a sharp decline when competitive online multiplayer became prevalent in AAA games on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Games like Street Fighter IV, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and most of the sports genre provided hours of entertainment as players pitted their skills against other players around the world.

This boom in online competition shafted co-op, as players were seemingly more keen to beat their friends than team up with them. However, the recent PS4 generation saw a resurgence of the genre, as many of the console's best games had excellent cooperative features on offer.

10 Dragon Age: Inquisition (89)

Dragon Age Inquisition Co-op

BioWare and EA teamed up again in 2014 to release the third main-series entry in the Dragon Age franchise. The game was seen as a return to form in the series, as Dragon Age II failed to live up to the high standards that the modern classic RPG Dragon Age: Origins set. Bioware were recognized for their efforts, as the game won multiple end of year awards including Game of the Year at The Game Awards and D.I.C.E awards.

The game's co-op mode was a separate feature to the single-player. The mode allowed players to join up to three other people to complete levels containing increasingly difficult enemies.

Thankfully, players didn't have to face Dark Souls III's bosses and enemies single-handedly. Through the use of embers, white sign soapstones, and covenants, players could summon another person to offer a helping hand.

8 Titanfall 2 (89)

EA and Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall 2 released in 2016 to universal praise from fans and critics, but lackluster sales figures. However, following multiple awards and consistent praise from fans, the game has maintained a solid player base who have been treated to multiple DLC's.

One of these DLC's, Operation Frontier Shield, added a new co-op mode titled Frontier Defense. The mode pitted a team of players against increasingly difficult waves of enemies.

That was until 2011 when Ubisoft released the critically acclaimed Rayman Origins, an excellent game that sparked a small resurgence of side-scrolling platformers. The game's success earned the limbless hero a direct sequel which was met with even higher praise.

The game's co-op gameplay comes in the form of Murfy, a helpful greenbottle who assists Rayman in his journey predominantly by interacting with movable objects.
