September was a strong month for video games, with several of its biggest releases going down a treat with both critics and general audiences. Nintendo re-released Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy to the delight of its biggest fans, Vicarious Visions unleashed its remake of the first two Tony Hawk Pro Skater games, and Paradox Interactive brought strategy veterans the long-awaited third iteration of its popular Crusader King series.

However, according to NPD's sales data, the biggest moneymaker of September was actually Marvel's Avengersbeating out the competition for the number one slot. The lofty position is a glint of good news for Crystal Dynamics, who announced today that it's looking to revamp the multiplayer game with a more engaging slate of post-game content following recent reports of its dwindling player base.

Taking second place in the charts is Super Mario 3D All-Stars. It is worth noting that the majority of the Nintendo published entries on the list don't take digital sales data into account, with All-Stars actually having the second-strongest Switch launch of the year behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Third goes to Madden NFL 21, fourth goes to Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2, and fifth goes to NBA 2K21.

No doubt Tony Hawk's high placement on the list is a good sign for the team over at Vicarious Visions, showing that the iconic skating franchise can still hang with some of the biggest names of today. If it continues to sell, it seems likely the franchise could follow in the footsteps of the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy and spawn a new entry in the franchise.

Landing in sixth was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which continues to sell extraordinarily well despite the upcoming release of Black Ops Cold War, while Crusader Kings 3 snags seventh. Unsurprisingly, Animal Crossing: New Horizon retains its place on the chart - clocking in at eighth - while Star Wars Squadrons soars into ninth and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe takes tenth.

Overall, it's a strong month for Crystal Dynamics which managed to make Marvel's Avengers the second best-selling superhero game in the US behind Marvel's Spider-Man. Of course, the studio announced some major changes earlier today, revealing that the Marvel's Avengers next-generation ports would be delayed alongside the release of the Kate Bishop DLC. This all comes after recent reports that the game's PC player count has been quickly dwindling, with the number of active online users frequently falling below 1,000 in recent weeks.

Marvel's Avengers is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
