Borderlands 3's Season Pass delivered four robust expansions since the game's launch on September 17, 2019. But when Borderlands 3's last Season Pass expansion, Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, arrived on September 10, few believed it would be the last of Borderlands 3's post-launch content. Gearbox has now proven that instinct correct. Thursday morning, Gearbox announced Borderlands 3 Season Pass 2, the first half of which arrives on November 10.
Borderlands 3's Season Pass 2 will be split into two halves. The first half is named the Designer's Cut and the second half is named the Director's Cut. The Designer's Cut will arrive November 10, coinciding with the release of next-gen consoles, while the Director's Cut won't be released until spring 2021. Pricing information for Season 2 or either of its expansions is not yet available, though Gearbox says to expect more information closer to November 10.
Early details for the Designer's Cut have already been shared. According to Gearbox, the Designer's Cut will not only introduce a new game mode named Arms Race, but it will unlock an additional Skill Tree for all of Borderlands 3's characters. Details for Amara and FL4K's new skill trees will be shared via livestream on October 20, with Moze and Zane's skill tree reveals to be shared on October 22. Character pages on the official Borderlands 3 website will also be updated, for those who can't watch the livestreams.
As for Arms Race, Gearbox isn't ready to share any details about Borderlands 3's newest game mode just yet. Another livestream will air on October 29 to reveal the first details about Arms Race, for those who are patient. In the meantime, Gearbox did share a teaser image for the Designer's Cut showing the players gathered and surrounded by enemies. The implication seems to be a sort of Horde mode where players survive waves of enemies, but that could be reading into the teaser too much.
Unfortunately, Gearbox isn't ready to share any information regarding Borderlands 3's Director's cut, other than it'll launch this spring. A hint is shared, however, as Gearbox says Borderlands 3 players can look forward to "next-level mayhem." Don't be surprised to see a new level of Mayhem arriving with the Director's Cut.
It's no surprise that Gearbox is continuing to release premium content for Borderlands 3 after the success of the game's first Season Pass. The lack of additional story content in Season Pass 2 may be disappointing to some, but just having additional reasons to go back and play Borderlands 3 should be enough for most fans. Gearbox also didn't say whether this would be the last of Borderlands 3's content, so who knows what's coming next.
Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrades coming as the new consoles launch.
