Debuting last year, The Outer Worlds managed to become one of 2019's biggest RPGs, offering an intergalactic world full of tongue-in-cheek humor, impactful moral decisions, and planet-hopping exploration. For many, it acted as a spiritual sequel to Obsidian Entertainment's work on Fallout: New Vegasoffering the player the same seemingly limitless agency to alter the story and embark on their own, unique adventure.

With the game gaining a significant following, many wondered whether it would wind up spinning into a franchise, with the story vaguely establishing the potential for a follow-up. According to industry insider Daniel Ahmad, a sequel could be in the early stages of development, with the reputable analyst claiming that a new Outer Worlds game is allegedly in pre-production.

According to Ahmad, the sequel is still in the very early stages, with the insider claiming that "a new entry in the franchise is being explored." He goes on to tentatively remind fans that it could easily "change into something else," so until something more concrete is announced, fans shouldn't get too excited. Seen as the first game often felt like it was testing the waters for a much bigger sequel somewhere down the line, a potential Outer Worlds 2 has a lot of promise if it does materialize in the years to come.

Of course, fans of the first game could be in for a long wait, with Obsidian currently working on several projects for Microsoft. Alongside their continuing work on co-op survival game Grounded, the team also recently announced Avowed: A fantasy RPG based within the same universe as Pillars of Eternity. With the team teasing first-person melee combat and a large open-world to explore, it seems the game will be a big project for the studio, likely resulting in some significant development time in the runup to completion. The studio also has a top-secret project in development, with the game likely to release after Avowed.

If The Outer Worlds 2 really is in the early stages, it'll be intriguing to see when Obsidian decides to work on it and what new ideas it can bring to the table. The first game was definitely a huge surprise for many, with some great moments and a lot of charm. Although fans should take the leak surrounding a sequel with a pinch of salt until Obsidian has anything official to say on the matter, the entertaining RPG definitely has the legs to become a sprawling franchise in the years to come.

The Outer Worlds 2 is rumored to be in early development.
