Spelunking is back in style as the recently released Spelunky 2 is making waves across the gaming space. With Spelunky 2 being one of the top games of 2020, PC players are eager to finally jump in after the PlayStation 4 version had a head start. However, it seems that the PC port will be missing a big feature upon release.

Spelunky 2 will not feature online co-op play when it releases on PC on September 29. The news came from Spelunky 2 designer Derek Yu who explains why online functionality was delayed for the PC launch.

Yu explains that the decision to release the title without online multiplayer was to avoid delaying the entire release. The positive outcome of this decision, according to Yu, is that cross-play functionality with the PlayStation 4 version will be included when online co-op is enabled. Yu would tweet further details about the recent updates for the PlayStation 4 version of Spelunky 2 which have improved online stability.

The online component of Spelunky 2 might not be the only reason fans were excited for the long-awaited sequel, but it has been a big selling point from developers Mossmouth and Bitworks. The gameplay reveal of Spelunky 2 focused on cooperative play as well as the numerous characters that could go on the treacherous journey.

The original Spelunky is a notoriously difficulty game even some eight-years after the remade version was released on the Xbox 360, and Spelunky 2 is just as tough. With the PC port just days away, fans may want to come to grips with the basics of Spelunky 2 before heading into the unknown depths. It's going to only be harder since there won't be any online help for the foreseeable future, and with social distancing still a big factor of everyday life, couch buddies are not exactly in high supply at the moment.

Spelunky 2 is available now on PlayStation 4 and will release on Steam on September 29.
