There is no denying that gamers want to get their hands on the next console generation, and one player even created an AR PlayStation 5 model just to see how it would look in their living room. However, there have been multiple speedbumps on the road to actually getting a PS5.

When it comes to the PS5, pre-order troubles started a long time ago. Originally, Sony set up a system where players could submit a request for eligibility to pre-order, and this was confusing to many. When Sony finally announced the date when the PS5 would be available to pre-order, it did so in a roundabout way, and as a result retailers and players alike scrambled to buy and sell preorders. It was a mess, and prominent retailer Walmart may be exacerbating that mess.

As of this writing, Walmart is sold out of PS5 pre-orders. This has been the case since soon after the pre-orders were announced, leading to players wondering what will happen if PS5 pre-orders run out all together. However, many have alerts set up to tell them when pre-order stocks replenish, including writers at the news site GameSpot who have apparently been receiving strange updates. The price of the PS5 preorder is, according to these reports, fluctuating wildly as Walmart matches competitor prices. Drops have been as severe as $377 dollars in some cases, according to its reports.

Walmart PS5 Preorders

This is not the first time Walmart has caused issues in the PS5 pre-order debacle. It was Walmart that jumped the gun on releasing its PS5 pre-orders, opening orders a day early. As a result, players were confused about the actual date of pre-order availability, and Walmart's stock sold out in minutes. When it comes to the current price fluctuation, things are similarly confusing. As of this writing, Walmart's pages for both the main and digital version of the PS5 shows them out of stock and at regular price.

Today marked the day when players would have been able to purchase pre-orders in physical stores. However, Walmart rolled that decision back due to concerns about social distancing amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This leaves players with more questions than answers about the state of PS5 pre-orders, and Walmart releasing strange alerts is likely not helping.

At this point, there's an argument to be made for waiting until later to purchase a next-gen console like the PS5. Xbox players are in the same boat, since the Xbox Series X pre-orders that began today have been just as chaotic.
