Destiny 2’s upcoming expansion Beyond Light promises many new things to engage Destiny players later this year. For example, the latest teaser trailer asks viewers the question of what’s under the ice of Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light is the first in a series of planned expansions for the science-fantasy shooter game, and developer Bungie has offered a lot of promises for its playerbase. Some of its new additions to the game include visiting the icy world of Europa and wielding the power of the enigmatic Darkness itself. The latest teaser trailer reinforced those additions, while introducing a few more key elements on top of that.

The trailer starts with narration by the elusive Variks, a prominent character from the game’s Fallen species with a particular perspective on things in Destiny 2’s setting. Throughout the trailer, he asks the player to consider what they hope to find on Europa, and overlay text specifically asks, "What's under the ice?" Variks also advises caution to the Guardian in their pursuit of answers there, which is contrasted by the Exo Stranger who tunes in halfway to state how they must use whatever they find in their fight against the Darkness, even potentially using its own power of Stasis.

The opening of the trailer focuses on imagery of smaller triangular shapes merging together into larger tetrahedrons, which are peppered throughout the trailer. The video provides glimpses into some of the new locations from Europa’s wide, windy, and desolate surface to its subterranean labs, factories, assembly lines, and Vex structures for good measure. It shows the guardians engaging the new Fallen House of Darkness using similar Stasis powers, though there is no sign of their leader Eramis, and the trailer ends ends with the Exo Stranger holding a small version of the tetrahedron in her hand.

From start to finish, Destiny 2: Beyond Light’s latest trailer manages to pack one mystery after another through its imagery and new locations, as well as the Stasis abilities both Guardians and the Fallen can use. It also makes good use of the conflicting perspectives presented by Variks' caution and the Exo Stranger's boldness about discovering Europa's secrets. As the first in a wave of Destiny’s newest expansions, Beyond Light has large expectations to live up to, especially as the game will be an Xbox Series X launch title on Game Pass.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light releases November 10, 2020 on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
