First-person shooter fans are counting the days until November 13, 2020, when Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War hits store shelves. The fifth entry in the Black Ops series is set to be a direct sequel to the 2010 game Call of Duty Black Ops, with the narrative taking place during the early '80s.

While the single-player campaign is gearing up to be an exciting romp, the multiplayer is looking just as intriguing, making numerous strides to differentiate itself from all the other entries in the series. While it will certainly retain a signature Call of Duty identity, other already-confirmed aspects seek to make it a wholly unique experience.

10 Integration With Warzone

Warzone was first introduced as a part of Modern Warfare. Despite being free-to-play, one had to fully install the 2019 title in order to run it. Black Ops Cold War will reach back in time and contain integration with the battle royale mode. Unlocks from multiplayer will be available in Warzone, and most previous unlocks from Modern Warfare will still work in Verdansk after the new game launches.

9 Cross-Generation Play

Cross-platform play alone feels like a dream come true and something unimaginable ten years ago. Playing with friends regardless of console is a pure treat, and one reason why Modern Warfare's multiplayer has resonated so deeply with people.

The upcoming release is taking things a step further by letting people play together across generations. That's right, players on PlayStation 5 and the new Xbox consoles can duke it out with those on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

8 Higher Frame Rate

Striving for realism has always meant pushing technological boundaries. Even in an age where most games struggled to maintain thirty frames per second, Call of Duty was always maintaining a rock-hard sixty. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will make that look like child's play, however, as next generation versions run the multiplayer at a whopping one hundred-twenty frames per second. Looks like it's time to buy a television with a higher refresh rate.

7 Deniable Operations

While the series started out with small-scale battles, more recent entries have dabbled with larger conflicts. This year's entry introduces Deniable Operations, a mode which is being touted as the center of the Black Ops Cold War multiplayer suite. Few details have been revealed about it as of now, but it is looking to be narrative-focused and use the unique properties of each map for a finely-tuned, unique objective-based match.

6 More Realistic Movement

Early in the generation, the series dove deeper in the future and decked out characters with enhancement which let them double jump and run across walls.

This changed a few years ago with a return to realism. Now, Black Ops Cold War is overhauling the way characters walk and run once again. Sprinting, for instance, starts characters off with a small boost before slightly slowing down. Jumps also slow the character down momentarily after landing.

5 VIP Escort

Among the slew of new game modes is VIP Escort. The dynamic of defending and destroying is nothing new, but this time the target is another player. One team defends their VIP while the other team is tasked with killing them. The VIP does not use their typical loadout, instead dropping in with a special pistol and several support items. The defending team wins when the VIP is successfully extracted.

4 Boats

It certainly will not be the first time players drove a boat in the franchise, but it will be the first time they take it front and center in the multiplayer action. The trailer reveals some thrilling moments players cannot wait to recreate when they get their hands on the game this November, such as gamers exchanging bullets from small boats while they speed alongside each other.

3 Gunsmith

In Modern Warfare and prior games, adding and removing attachments from guns displayed the advantages and drawbacks of visually using a bar. Green meant it was positive for the gun's stat, while red was detrimental. To make this process a little clearer, the gunsmith in Black Ops Cold War will display these using percentage numbers, so players know exactly how the attachment will affect the gun with a direct number value.

2 Armata Map

The maps in the new game look to be more dynamic and varied than ever before. Nothing exemplified this more in the developer's presentation revealing the multiplayer than the map Armata, which is set on two boats in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. Players shoot at each other from across the two vessels, swim in the water, zip over to the other side, or even attack each other in boats.

1 Scorestreaks

Killstreaks are gone from this entry and replaced entirely by scorestreaks, which return in a different fashion. Scorestreaks will carry over between deaths, giving more players the opportunity to use them. Since it is based on score, those in support roles or focused on objectives will also be able to engage with them more often. To balance this, they work on a cooldown, and those who earn them in one life will earn a bonus as well.
