Systemic Reaction, which is part of Avalanche Studios Group, has announced the release date for its new PvE multiplayer FPS. Second Extinction is set on an Earth which has succumbed to a new ice age, and the dinosaurs have returned to rule. The game was originally scheduled to release in September, but the studio has confirmed Early Access on Steam starts October 13th.

Up to three players will have to cooperate to traverse the hostile wilderness, fighting off Styracosaurs, which the devs call Bulls, and other vicious reptiles on their way to their mission objective. Players choose from one of four classes, their loadout, and where on the map to deploy, adding an element of strategy to the FPS. The goal is to get in, fight off masses of dinos, secure the objective, and get out alive. This is a far cry from Parkasaurus, which recently left early access.

This new title received high praise from IGN's Ryan McCaffrey, who described it as "Robert Muldoon's dream game," referring to Jurassic Park's game warden who famously uttered the last words, "Clever girl." Players in this title have the opportunity to wield heavy artillery against the likes of T-Rexes, raptors, and other monstrous lizards with up to two friends at a time.

From the looks of early gameplay footage, Second Extinction will be fast-paced and bloody, unlike Deathground, another dinosaur game in development that has more of a stealth/horror vibe. This is one of those survival games that will have players thinking they're doing well, right up until they're taken by surprise by a T-Rex whose only vulnerable spot is its throat, as well as a few raptor friends. Very quickly the whole area erupts into a frenzy of teeth, claws, muzzle flashes, and heavy reptile footsteps. Getting unexpectedly doused by an acid raptor's attack is sure to knock someone off their feet, and it will be up to their teammates to revive them in time.

The game, as it stands now, looks like it will be fun to play with friends, but may lack the depth right now to keep it engaging for more than a few matches at a time. Given the game is in Early Access, the studio has a lot of room to expand. Even if the entirety of the game consists of little more than maps, objectives, and dinosaurs, Systemic Reaction will be able to add new areas and new enemies in perpetuity, if it's willing to put in the work.

Players are clearly thirsty for dinosaur titles, as evidenced by how Deathground achieved its Kickstarter goal in just 20 days. Reactions to the trailer so far have been quite positive, and there are already fans out there asking for a comic book version of the game featuring Tom Dubois' art.

Second Extinction will be available for Early Access October 13th for Steam and Xbox Series X.
