While Borderlands 3 players have been working their way through Krieg’s warped mind in the final season pass expansion for the game, one fan has stumbled upon a clear nod to a previous Borderlands game. The game in question is none other than Tales from the Borderlands, with the Borderlands 3 easter egg paying homage to one of its more memorable moments.

While Randy Pitchford has already jumped ahead of the Krieg expansion and started talking about a new Borderlands 3 game mode, fans are still looking for everything there is to find inside the psycho’s head. Players like grilledcheesehat121 made an interesting discovery by looking outside the map of one of the locations in the new DLC, finding a Handsome Jack mask with a needle in his eye. While this may be confusing for those who have only played the mainline entries in the series, fans who experience Tales from the Borderlands will know the moment right away.

Tales from the Borderlands, the popular Telltale game set after the events of Borderlands 2, features a moment where protagonist Rhys uses an injector on his cybernetics to force out a holographic version of Handsome Jack. With that in mind, it is hard to see the floating mask as anything but a nod to that memorable moment from Tales from the Borderlands. Despite the controversy regarding Troy Baker’s removal from the role of Rhys, the character’s appearance within Borderlands 3’s main story was well received, so fans will likely appreciate the nod to the character's origin.

Fans have expressed a desire to see more of Rhys, as well as get some answers on what happened to con-artist turned Vault Hunter Fiona. Fiona did not appear within the story of Borderlands 3 or through audio logs, leaving many players to wonder what happened to the character. Her sister, Sasha, was also left out of the Borderlands 3 story. When and if these characters ever make an appearance in Borderlands 3 remains to be seen, but at the very least, fans may soon get the chance to play the original Tales game again.

While players fight their way to Vaulthalla in the new Krieg expansion, they may find other secrets present within the mind of the Borderlands 2 vault hunter. While those secrets may not contain references to Tales specifically, there is plenty of potential for small nods to other things that happened within the Borderlands universe to be discovered. This Tales from the Borderlands easter egg is a neat reference, and one that could offer a small shred of hope for a season two now that Telltale has reopened.

If another season of Tales never comes, though, perhaps the answer for giving fans more content with Fiona and Rhys lies within board games. If the upcoming tabletop Tiny Tina game proves successful, perhaps a choose your own adventure-style game could come for Tales fans one day and give them answers on the story’s vague ending.

Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X upgrades will also be available.
