RPGs have easily been one of the biggest dominating genres in the gaming industry, and it's easy to see why this is the case. After all, the idea of rewarding everything that the player does in the game can help hammer in the point of progress, giving players a strong sense of satisfaction indeed.

One such RPG series that is still going strong to this day — even though the recent title in this series is heading down a wrong direction — is the Fallout series. Initially a top-down SRPG masterpiece by Interplay, the series evolved under Bethesda into a first-person action RPG that became one of the most popular gaming franchises of all time.

Fallout 76 might be a dark chapter in the illustrious history of the series, but there's no denying that the potential of a single-player Fallout sequel is still immense. For people who are patiently waiting for Fallout 5 to finally be announced, here are ten games that do justice to this series in the best way possible, and will help bide one's time quite fruitfully as well.

10 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim Solitude

It would be impossible to talk about games similar to Fallout, withouting mention the other behemoth of a series under Bethesda's belt.

The Elder Scrolls is one of the most well-known fantasy role-playing games around, and there's no better game in the series than Skyrim, which is easily one of the best video games of all time.

There's a reason why this title is constantly re-released for pretty much every known platform — it's just that good.

9 Wasteland 3

Wasteland 3 review

The recently-released Wasteland 3 is essentially how a modern top-down Fallout RPG would look like. It's one of the more impressive games to have come out in a while, and it's a shame that the game hasn't been given its due respect by the publisher, with the lack of marketing being a clear indication of how little faith Deep Silver has in this RPG.

It's a shame, since Wasteland 3 is easily one of the best top-down action RPGs around, with every battle turning into a nail-biting encounter where even the smallest misstep can lead to a world of hurt for the player.

8 The Outer Worlds

People were skeptical about the linear, tight adventures in the Metro series being discarded in the latest game for an open-world experience. However, props must be given to Metro Exodus for making everything in the game bigger, better, and more horrifying, without losing out on what made the franchise special.

It's a must-play for anyone who enjoys action games in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Of course, one can't really talk about engaging open-world action RPGs without mentioning the masterpiece that is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This game put CD Projekt Red on the map as one of the best game developers of all time, which is definitely why the hype for Cyberpunk 2077 is through the roof.

Playing as Geralt of Rivia in the final chapter of his engrossing tale is a wildly entertaining experience indeed, and certainly not something that any self-respecting gamer should miss out on.

1 Fallout: New Vegas

We've already mentioned The Outer Worlds, developed by the brilliant Obsidian Entertainment. While this studio might've definitely hit most of the right notes with this sci-fi RPG, it's still far from being their best title — that honor would obviously go to Fallout: New Vegas instead.

While this game might've been a bug-riddled mess upon launch, Fallout: New Vegas slowly became one of the greatest role-playing games of all time, with players genuinely being able to play exactly the character they want with no restrictions whatsoever.

It's easily one of the deepest RPGs that anyone can get into... although it's highly recommended to download a fair share of mods to make the experience more bearable.
