Borderlands 3 saw fan favorite vault hunter Krieg relegated to a handful of audio logs, which was certainly a disappointment to some fans. While these recordings were interesting and powerful, showcasing the character’s close relationship with Maya the Siren, fans were desperate to see more from the beloved Psycho. With the recent reveal that the final Borderlands 3 DLC is centered on Krieg, today’s trailer has confirmed that the DLC will launch on September 10. Please note that this article will have SPOILERS for the Borderlands 3 campaign.

Within this new trailer for Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, a confirmation of this DLC’s setting is provided, and it is very reminiscent of The Pre-Sequel’s Claptastic Voyage expansion. As Tannis describes in the opening seconds of the trailer, Borderlands 3’s four vault hunters are going to dive into the mind of Krieg, though their objective is not clear.

Why the vault hunters are entering Krieg’s mind is not shared, though a few hints are provided. The trailer claims that a place known as “Loothalla” exists within the Psycho’s brain, but this seems like a surface level explanation for why the vault hunters are exploring Krieg’s mind. The far more interesting possibility is that they are there to restore Krieg’s sanity, or perhaps just trying to calm him down after he discovers the death of Maya in Borderlands 3.

Whatever the case, the world of Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck looks just as trippy and over the top as one would expect the mind of Krieg to be. Krieg is seen all over the trailer, whether he be a massive god-like figure talking down to the vault hunters or a smaller, oddly colored version of himself. Intriguingly, Maya is seen within the trailer, likely existing as a figment of Krieg’s wild imagination. Lilith was also seen, ensuring that there will be some emotional moments and a proper sendoff for the two most popular Sirens.

It is incredibly exciting to see Krieg playing a large role in the Borderlands story again, and no matter how this DLC ends, it is a safe bet that fans will see him in future Borderlands content. Whether more content comes within Borderlands 3 itself is unclear, though a recent tweet from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has confirmed that some more premium DLC is likely coming. Hopefully players get to see Krieg again if that happens, though if they must wait until Borderlands 4, at least they can rest easy knowing that Krieg is getting an entire expansion to shine.

Krieg’s popularity and the hype around this DLC should be a wakeup call to Gearbox, as the Borderlands 3 developers refusing to add DLC characters has left fans heavily disappointed. Krieg would not exist without that form of post launch content, and the possibility of another playable vault hunter could add so much to the longevity of Borderlands 3. Whether Gearbox will give in to these fan demands is unclear, but at the very least it looks like the studio will be providing fans with another worthwhile expansion in Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck.

Borderlands 3 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
