One Twitter user discovered a secret that can only be uncovered after a player beats the game on Grounded difficulty, giving more context to a memorable moment in the game's main story. The Grounded update introduced many new modes to The Last of Us 2, including different visual filters and access to unlimited resources if the player so chooses. Along with these additions, the game now allows players to intensify the difficulty for themselves, which Naughty Dog claims is "the ultimate test of skill" for gamers who want to prove their mettle. This extreme difficulty makes enemies even deadlier than usual while also making resource more scarce, and if players can complete this challenge, the game gives them an extra song in the credits as a reward.
While The Last of Us 2 has been a controversial game since its release, many fans can agree that the scene where Joel teaches Ellie how to play the guitar is very heartwarming. Before he gives Ellie the guitar, Joel plays the opening section of a song called "Future Days" by Pearl Jam, singing the lyrics in time with his strumming. However, he seems to get embarrassed and stops playing, handing the guitar off to Ellie. After Joel is murdered, there are times throughout The Last of Us 2 when Ellie also plays the song, but players never get to hear Joel sing the full song in the main game.
However, one The Last of Us 2 player took to Twitter after they finished the game on Grounded mode. When a player beats the game on Grounded difficulty or Permadeath mode, then there are more songs unlocked in the end credits, including a full version of the song "Future Days" sung by Joel. Hearing Troy Baker sing the lyrics made many fans emotional and really tied the end of the story together nicely, and many fans replied to the tweet with antidotes of their own encounters with the song.
Many The Last of Us 2 players appreciate this inclusion in the game, especially hard-fought victories against Grounded difficulties. While some fans may dislike the direction that Naughty Dog took with Abby in this game, most can agree that this is a heartwarming moment that they enjoy listening to and illustrates the bond between Ellie and Joel in their complicated relationship.
