Embracer Group acquires a load of studios, including 4A and New World Interactive

THQ Nordic parent company Embracer Group has snapped up a number of games studios, including Metro developer 4A and Insurgency: Sandstorm maker New World Interactive.

The firm bought the former for "approximately $36 million on a cash and debt-free basis equivalent to an equity value of $45 million" via its Saber Interactive studio. 4A is becoming part of Saber, which Embracer bought at the start of 2020.

New World Interactive is also coming under the Saber Interactive umbrella, with Embracer paying an undisclosed amount for the Insurgency developer.

Embracer has also bought ten-person outfit Vermila Studios for €900,000 ($1m) via Amplifier Game Invest. The firm is currently working on its first game, the horror title Crisol: Theater of Idols.

The THQ Nordic parent's Amplifier Game Investment outfit has also shelled out €300,000 ($354,191) for Rare Earth Games, a new studio that's been founded by Michael Borras, Helmut Hutterer and Peter Ehardt, vets of Iron Mountain and Socialspeil Entertainment. Amplifier is also the proud owner of Palindrome Interactive after acquiring the remaining 50 per cent of shares in the company for kr21.5m ($2.47m).

As if that wasn't enough, Austria's Pow Wow Entertainment has been bought by Embracer for an undisclosed amount, and mobile live-ops firm Deca Games for €25m ($29.5m), with the firm able to earn up to €60m ($70.8) if it hits its performance milestones.

Finally, Embracer's Koch Media business has snapped up TV sales agent Sola Media for €2.3m ($2.7m).

"We continue to patiently execute on our M&A strategy, with the ambition of welcoming more entrepreneurs to the Group," CEO Lars Wingefors (pictured) told shareholders in Embracer's financial report for the three months ending June 2020.

"Currently we have more discussions than ever with potential joiners, including a handful of sizable companies that could form new operative groups. Our decentralised strategy, where founders and creators keep their own identity whilst getting access to our growing eco-system, has proven to be increasingly successful. I am a firm believer in empowering great people to make their own decisions."
