Splinter Cell is a series that has lain dormant for years now, but fans will soon have more to look forward to than a new animated Netflix series. Today, Ubisoft announced that the series’ star, black ops agent Sam Fisher, will be coming to another popular Tom Clancy title, Rainbow Six Siege, as a playable character in the upcoming Operation Shadow Legacy update.

This probably won’t come as a surprise for many fans. There were multiple leaks back in May that hinted at the addition of a Splinter Cell character in Rainbow Six Siege. Unfortunately, the official announcement doesn’t divulge much more about how Fisher (or Zero as he’ll be known in-game) will play at the moment, as Ubisoft is saving the full reveal of Operation Shadow Legacy for this Sunday, August 16, during Siege's North American Mini Major Finals.

Instead, the announcement teaser trailer focuses more on his return following the seven years since the last Splinter Cell game, Splinter Cell: Blacklist. “You should know better than to write me off,” says an older, more grizzled Fisher wearing a thick jacket over his bodysuit as he emerges from the shadows. “Consider this a teaching moment."

That said, it seems Ubisoft will have Fisher play similarly to how he did in previous Splinter Cell games, according to the trailer’s accompanying description, “Prepare. Execute. Vanish.” The trailer also suggests that night vision will come into play, since while Fisher seems to be missing his signature night vision goggles, he’s still able to trigger a similar screen effect with the help of a handheld device.

The official Rainbow Six Siege website elaborates a little more. There, Ubisoft dropped an in-universe report on Fisher joining up with Team Rainbow and described his toolset as follows: “There is a flexibility of movement and behavior that can be used on the offensive as well as preparation for the defensive that is well suited to his inclination to take advantage of any situation.”

No doubt plenty of fans are going to be excited to see Fisher being added, but on the other hand, this probably won’t be well-received by those who are getting tired of Splinter Cell being relegated to cameos in other Ubisoft games like Siege and just want the publisher to finally make a new game. With this high-profile addition to Siege and the Netflix series on the horizon, though, it’s possible that Ubisoft may be testing the waters.

Rainbow Six Siege is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with plans to launch on next-gen consoles as well.
