Borderlands 3 players are currently being treated to a boss loot event in the looter shooter, but for the first time since the game's initial release, players are in the dark as to what comes after these events. Ever since the first event, players have had a roadmap to clue them in on when content would come.

However, since the Borderlands 3 Spring 2020 roadmap released earlier this year, fans have gone without one. Summer has practically come to an end without a roadmap, and Bounty of Blood dropped without one either. It seems strange to only introduce 2 roadmaps if a complete DLC 1-DLC 4 roadmap wasn't planned, but there's plenty of explanations for that, including COVID-19. Nonetheless, many fans are likely asking, "when's the next DLC dropping?" Notwithstanding potential delays, a past pattern indicates it could be relatively soon.

Borderlands 3 DLC Release Pattern

By looking at the established Borderlands 3 DLC pattern, it's possible to attempt to narrow down when Borderlands 3 DLC 4 drops. The key dates to keep in mind are as follows:

  • Borderlands 3 release date: September 13, 2019
  • Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot release date: December 19, 2019
  • Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright and Hammerlock release date: March 26, 2020
  • Bounty of Blood: A Fistful of Redemption release date: June 25, 2020

There are two notable patterns to pull from this info. The smallest bit is that each Borderlands 3 DLC released closer to the middle-end of the month, as Heist of the Handsome Jackpot was the earliest DLC released. Furthermore, the most important thing is that three months pass between each DLC, including DLC 1 from the first game. This shows some indication that roadmaps were planned, as these neatly correspond with one another, but at the same time, there is the caveat that COVID-19 closures and work-from-home policies began around Guns, Love, and Tentacles. Yet, barring any potential delay, this could suggest that Borderlands 3 DLC 4 will release near the end of September, but this pattern isn't the only thing to hint at this.

Borderlands 3 DLC 4 Narrowed Down

Other than the DLC release date pattern, there's two big things going for a mid-to-end September release for Krieg's hotly-anticipated DLC. First, September is the one year anniversary of Borderlands 3's release, meaning Gearbox Software could be cooking up some big event for that date or shortly thereafter. Krieg coming in with his DLC would be a perfect way to end the current season pass, while celebrating the game's one year anniversary. In fact, it wouldn't be altogether unsurprising to see Krieg end one season pass and kickstart another, as Borderlands 3 is the first title of the franchise to come out during the big game-as-a-service multiple season-passes era. It may have started it, but other games continued this style of approach.

Either way, this release window is narrowed further by the series of mini-events currently taking place in the game. Borderlands 3's mini events are slated to come to an end on September 10, just 3 days before the anniversary, and in the past, DLC has released after or near the end of another event. This reasonably narrows the window down from potentially as early as September 10 (although September 13 would likely be a more attractive date) to as late as September 26.

It's still quite a wait given that it's the start of August, but without a BL3 roadmap and only context clues to go on, fans should be ready to see something big around the game's anniversary. The seemingly likeliest scenario is a a mid-September reveal leading to release of Borderlands 3's Krieg DLC, and that would likely be a proper way to celebrate the looter shooter's one-year anniversary.
